Newell, 4-1, Klamath Kails oil company employe, died last night from a wound inflicted by a stray bullet while he was deer hunting near Bly, Ore. It was Klamath county's first hunting fatality of thr season. Myrta Iieber, members of the Oregon State Motor association and Bend chamber of commerce office stuff here, left this morning on a trip that will take them us far south as Bishop, Calif., over the Thiee Klags highway, as guests of the Lakevlew chamber of commerce. Miss Beaver and Mm. Loehcr are making the trip In a ear provided by thr Mt. Hood Stages. On Thursday, the young women will lie guests of the Reno, Nov., chamber of commerce, at a luncheon. Only quiet sounds of the country side, the drip, drip from still wet leaves, the low murmur of weary trees, the weird hoot of an owl were audible. Sidney's thoughts slowly clarl fled. Ho could now arrange evl donee In an orderly faahion as a lawyer should, despite the fact thut all of this concerned the mur der of on old friend. Much appeared significant. The broken window in the Jungle: the I.llllput gun in thr paw of the great ape; the hidden key; the short circuit in one part of the Jungle while the lights had been turned off In the other. Sidney groped for an answer. There was that fact that one could have drawn a straight line from the broken window to the new lioness and from there to the cof fee table whore a tiny flame had pricked the darkness beneath Pat Langdnn's piquant face. Could Pat have been the desired target? Had Adam, by chance, been In the direct line of fire? But Adam had been facing in the wrong direction. What about the ransacked desk and the open windows in Lang don's bedroom and in the drawing room below? The footprints of the mysterous dog stood by themselves. It was impossible to fit them Into any theory. And who had made a shadow against Maria's window? Silently, carefully, Braltwood reviewed events of the past 12 hours, searching in vain for some careless word, some hidden action. thut might give him the answer to this baffling puzzle. He considered various theories, argued them out. rejected them as impossible. Somewhere, In this house, there was a clew that would solve everything. Could he discover it? Why had Adam been shot? Was it murder, or accident? An out sider, or an enemy in the room? Gundrum's story of a valuable map had Its points,Sidney men tally agreed, but had the profes sor actually solved the crime with hit-and-miss story? Who would wish Adam dead? Craig Gundrum had an age-old motive for the murder. So. for that matter, had Marta. Gundrum could have slipped back into the Jungle if he had made quick work of his search of the storeroom. and aided by a flash of lightning, he might have killed Adam. Most puzzling of all was Adam's reason for standing on the block by the lioness. True, it was in direct line with the door, but he could not have seen anyone enter except in a flash of lightning. Why had he remained there, in stead of Joining the ladles at the table where he could have re assured them? Abruptly, Braltwood started. Had he heard steps outside? He slipped his revolver Into his pock et and peered Into the hall. At Pat's orders the entire house had been left lighted, but he could see no one. Yet the conviction that some person had passed remained. Nella's room was opposite. Pat's and Adam's divided the front of tho house. Then he noticed that Adam's door was slightly ajar. If the thief had returned for what ever It was he had failed to find earlier in the evening, he certain ly had courage. The door opened a little more and Nclla peered out. In a long, clinging white gown and with dark eyes brilliant as stars, she looked unreal. Had anyone told Sidney that she had sufficient courage to enter the murdered man's room alone, at that hour, he would not have believed it. She saw him then and beckenod. Still without speaking, she mo Honed him within the room and to a door which connected Adam's room with that occupied hy Pat. Then she indicated that he must kneel at the keyhole and listen. Kneeling, Sidney could see only the back of a divan thut blocked the door. Ho heard two guarded voices. "You should not have come here. Pal." Craig Gundrum's low, firm tones could not he mistaken. "I had to see you. No one saw me." ! Hush, Craig . . . Plowman ne- lirves we did the murder. I could . read It In hi eyes." "Km t talk so loudly. The talk became Inaudible then, ' and In a frw momenta Pat's door closed softly. Silence followed. Nellu drew Sidney back to the ! center of the room. "I couldn't sleep," she whis pered. "I decided to go to you. I , had hardly opened my door when I heard someone coming softly downstairs. I closed the door, but I saw Mr. Gundrum. Then I heard Pat'a door open. I hear so well. "In my eagerness to know what they hud to say to teach other, I forgot to he afraid. I came here to listen." She was trembling, but she added, "Suddenly I became afraid again, and I wanted you." "They have not really con demned themselves, Nella," Sid ney reasoned. "Both realize that they are under suspicion: that is all we heard them admit." "She is after Uncle Adam's money," Nello half sobbed. "But for me, she would have it all. Oh, Sidney. I'm terribly afraid. They may try to put me away, too. That's what made Uncle Adam so queer. He feared her." "Why should Adam have feared her, Nella? He had faced many i dangers without fear." "I don t know why. but i m convinced that he did," Nella in sisted. "Many women marry for money. Nella. Let us not make Pat a monster until we nave proot that she Is one." He led the girl back to her room and had turned toward his own door when he heard a soft tread in the hall above, and the whim pering of a dog. ( To Be Continued I South Redmond South Redmond. Oct. 21 (Spe cial) Mr. and Mrs. Harold Doty visited Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nolan in Redmond, Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Doty enter tained with a dinner and bridge party Friday evening. Those pres ent were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lantz. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Rennolds and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Knorr. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Chambers enjoyed a wedding anniversary dinner at their home Monday. All but three of the children were at home for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Clark were guests also. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kissler of Powell Butte were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Boyd. Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Tucker of Sandy were overnight guests of Mrs. Tuckers parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Armstrong, Monday night H. O. Wilson and son, Jesse, made a business trip to Madras, Saturday. Mrs. John Oakes and Mrst w. T. Ireland and children spent Wednesday in Bend with their sis ter, Mrs. N. G. McDanlel. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lantz of Terrebonne were dinner guests Tuesday of Mrs. Lantz's parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Ralston. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lantz have rented their small farm to Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Peden and will leave soon for Garibaldi to spend some time with their son, Marvin Lantz and family. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Ralston, who are caring for the Roy Newell place, received word from the Newclls that they had been visiting in Washington. D. C, and were ready to leave for visits in Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Cork were pleasantly surprised last Friday evening- when Mrs. Cork's cousin. Miss Jessie Lee Moore, of Day vllle, stopped for an over-night visit with them on her way home from the Pacific International livestock show in Portland. Jessie Lee won her trip through her 4-H club work. She was also queen of the Grant county fair this year. Mrs. John Oakes met with her Sunday school class of junior girls, Thursday evening at the home of Julia Christiansen, for their first meeting of the new year. Officers were elected and committees appointed. Fourteen members wore present. Alter tne meeting, games were played and rfreshments were servd. They explained they had been warned that a raid was to be made on their place that night, and were prepared for "eventualities." A visit by the officers to the home of the leaders of the opposing group revealed that they were also prepared for any trouble that might happen along. It is this tense situation that makes Ashwood a danger spot at present, officers have indicated. They have received several calls from members of the opposing groups. Fire Investigators from state headquarters entered the Ash wood picture after Wood's new store burned to the ground on October 10, just prior to the date set for its opening. Into that new building was to have been moved the postofflce. Officers said that threats had been made that the new store "would never open." The new building: erected by Wood, was probably the finest in the little town. An announcement has been made as to the results of the In vestigation into the possibility that the fire might have been of incendiary origin. Growing out of the Ashwood trouble, one arrest was made. He received a 30 day jail sent ence. On October 13, Gill was re moved to the St Charles hospital In Bend, his arms slashed by a . razor blade. Officers said that the wounds were apparently self in flicted. After spending a week In the Bend hospital. Gill was re turned to Madras by Sheriff Dus- sault Gill and a companion assertedly rode through the streets ot Ash wood. in frontier style. In addition . to shooting from a highway, Gill assertedly lassoed a state high- way sign. It was also reported that Gill and his companion, whose name is being withheld because no charges were filed against him. went to Wood and demanded ihat he sign the petition circulated hy persons wishing to keep the post office in its present location. Wood refused. Officers are not making public the names of any of the persons questioned so far In connection with the unsettled conditions in Ashwood. However, It has been In dicated that the investigations arc not yet ended. Tom Craft, Ashwood youth who was killed in an accident at the Horse Heaven mine early in the year, was formerly Ashwood post master and store operator, in a building leased from Wood.
