May 21 UV-or Mose hadn't got it any more. No matter how much Irad the Boston Red Sox Rive Lefty Grove, he. can't hold it. That's happened five times in suc cession now. Grove's swan song may well have been that 2-hitter he pitched against Washington on opening day. It's doubtful if he'll ever go another innings in one game. Yesterday he had a 2-0 lead and a 6-3 lead over the Tigers but couldn't protect it. When Grove left the game in the wventh the Red Sox led. 7-6. so 01' Moe has yet to be credited with de feat. With Pinky Higgins going Ber serk at bat with three homers, the Tigers plastered a 10-7 licking on the Red Sox. Higgins drove in seven nms with his three homers, the last one winning the game. Jimmy Foxx hit homer No. 10 with the bases loaded. Cleveland knocked the Yanks back into the cellar by thumping the j world's champions. 10-2. enabling the Tribe to move within a game and a 'Yiau oi me irague-ieaaing nra 1 So. Lefty Al Smith held the Yanks Yanks escaped a shut-out as a result of Dickey's double which drove in two runs. Smith's 3 -hitter was his second straight victory over the Yanks and his third win oi the sea son. In the other two American league games the Athletics trounced the ' Browns. 8-4, and moved into fourth place, while the White Sox left the cellar by defeating the Senators, 5-4. Frank Hayes hit two homers for the As. Cincinnati's pitching folded up and the usually feeble Bees slugged out a 13-4 victory over the Reds. The Cubs, playing with a make shift infield, beat the Dodgers again. 6-ti. It was Brooklyn's third straight Harry Danning hit a triple and ! homer and drove in five runs as the Giants beat the Cardinals, 6-4. Scoring seven runs in the ninth, the, Phils came from way back to beat the Pirates, 6-7. Howard has at last learned that no man can keep on throwing sevens forever. Into every life some snake eyes and box cars must fall. This time a vcar affo Howard was Midas in a tweed suit. Everything he touched around a race track brought him gold. Old line stables had been trying for years to win such races as the Santa Anita handicap, the Brook lyn, the Suburban, the Punlico Spe cial and other classic stakes. They couldn't believe that any one man without so much as even a breeding farm of his own could come up with three -such horses as Seabiscuit. Kavak II and Sorteado. Then, three months ago, when he added Mioland to his string for a paltry $15,000 and won $10,000 of this sum back the first time he sent the Oregon-bred to the post, he appeared to have both the three-year-old and handicap championships under his control. . But things happen fast in racing and now Howard, who must have wondered whv these thines hadn't happened before, can realize the feel ing of Alfred Vanderbilt when Ad venturer was killed in a fall: how William Ziegler. Jr.. was affected when El Chico stumbled and had to be destroyed: how J. H. Loucheim grieved when Pompoon died suddenly oi a rare intestinal ailment, and Dow J. A. Manfuso suffered when his An eroid was burned to death in a fire in Kentucky a month ago. Howard first felt the bad fortunes of racing luck when his Argentine Ambler. Sorteado. broke a suspen sory ligament in New York just a week after he had run to a new American record for a mile and a half. But when Seabiscuit was sent into retirement after winning the last Santa Anita. Howard still had a double-barreled threat in Kayak II and Mioland. The former, four-year-old champion of 1939. had been en tered for almost everv outstandinff stake in the east and the west this season, and despite his defeat by Challedon last November he looked like a good bid for the title of "horse of the year." Today Kayak is sick and ailing in a barn at Pimlico and he won't run for at least two more months, if then. He developed a sudden cough and fever, ard Howard was forced to declare him from such races as the Brooklyn and suburban handicaps. With Kayak's sickness the once in vincible stable was cut to a single horse Mioland. who had won the San Juan Capistrano. run fourth in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Preakness before ever reaching I his top form. Today he is gone, too, I at least until 1941. j Howard sadly announced that yes terday. He said the stretch-running son of an imported German sire had I bolted while working out at Pimlico, I thrown his exercise boy and then stumbled on a concrete walk. How- Bend Sand and Gravel All Grades Crushed Rock Phono28-F-3I Rt. 2 Box 63 -A Box Shooks By J. R. Williams DrXEC.ATKS TO MEET Portland. May 21 IP A meeting of 1936 delegates and 1940 delegates elect to the republican national con vention was set today for Thursday to select an interim successor to Na tional Committeeman Ralph E. Wil liams, who died suddenly lust week. ard did not detail the colt's injuries, but he did say that "he was badly hurt and can not be sent to the post again this season." Now the San Franciscan hasn't a single top flight hone m a year when any good thoroughbred could make a lot of money and a lasting reputa tion. Bimelech has been beaten twice both times by horses not rated the equal of Mioland. Challe don won't be back to the races in the handicap division until late summer at least and Kayak's only opposition there would be Eight Thirty. So the man who walks up to a mu tual window isn't the only gambler in racing, after all. SVNOltilS OF ,t.M IL ST.ITKMKM l the LONDON LA.NCAJ.HIUI-; I.N.
