Brake Inspection-Your Protection
If every automobile owner had his brakes examined at regu
lar intervals at a reliable service station there would be a marked
decrease in the number of traffic accidents.
Motorists should remember that good brakes prevent bad
breaks. The average driver does not appreciate that giving
proper attention to brakes will not only lessen the chances of
accidents, but also will result in lengthening the life of the as
bestos brake lining. There are but lew car owners who are
familiar enough with brakes to properly adjust them so those
who are not expert mechanics will find it cheaper to have their
brakes inspected, adjusted or relined at a service station.
These suggestions are offered to keep brakes in good working
condition:
1. Have your brakes inspected every thirty days.
2. Keep the right and leu wheel brakes operating with
equal pressure.
3. The brake lining should be kept clear of oil, grit and
metal particles.
4. Have the brake lining cleaned with gasoline every three
months.
.1 Glazed spots on the lining should be removed by a
mechanic.
6. Have the nuts, rivets, etc., tightened at regular in
tervals. 7. The foot pedal and hand lever should be kept in pro
per position.
8. Both brakes should be tested before starting.
9. Apply the brakes slowly as a rule, but use them quick
ly when necessary.
10. Your brakes should be adjusted so that in an emer
gency you can slide the wheels.
11. U8 the motor as a brake on hills.
12. Try out your brakes under various conditions to see
how quickly the car will stop. (In New York City and
certain other communities police officers halt vehicles
to ascertain the condition of the brakes. Those found
needing adjustment or relining usually are fined $25
each.)
