She had gone to a dance at Pler.sant Itldge with Miss Frances Smec and two young men. one of them Miss Srnec's cousin, and had spent Satur day and Sunday nights at the Smc home. She stayed away from the Fair child home these nights because she had been frightened Friday night while staying there alone, believing there wa"s someone in the bouse. On Sunday she was ill as a result of outing grapes, and .Monday morning after returning to the Fairchild home she suffered an nttnek of unconsci ousness. After making preparations to do the washing, she went upstulrs to telephone for groceries; and on her way back to the basement she set fire to a box of papers standing nesr the foot of the stairs. This was done, she said, to smoke up the house an that her failure to wash the wood work iroutd not lie discovered. Next the girl scattered some jew elry about the front room to mskS it appesr that someone had attempt ed a robliery. and then called the fire department, asking the telephone op erator to turn in the nlnrni.
