The Mel bourne correspondent of the Kx. change Telegraph cabled today that 200 persons were injured, including 60 seriously, when a veranda col lapsed during a parade of officers, and sailors from the American fleet there. Hun I dreds of sepctators. mostly girls anil ' women, were hurled to the street during a parade of 2.000 American sailors lure today when the veranda I outside a motion picture theater CO I i lapsed. ! One hundred were injured, several 1 fatally. The streets of Melbourne were gor geously decorated for a fete in hoaoi of the Americans who arrived with a portion of the Pacific fleet this : week. When the veranda crashed, the 'parade hilled. The American .-aib.r.- broke ranks and went to the assist ance of the victims. Ambulances clanged lo the scne and the "Cobs" helped administer first aid. I Oyuma. secre tary of' the Japanese Association of Oregon, expresses hope IhaT the re cent ousting of Japunese workmen by residents of Toledo. Oregon, tuuy have no evil results. Oyuma explains that when it was first proposed that Japanese be em ployed on the "green chain." Toledo business men declared themselves against the employment of Japanese, who Immediately agreed nut to oc ecpt the work. Later the business men changed their decision and tb" Oriental laborers went to work, only to find that the greater part of the town's population still held their objections to Japanese labor.
