eligible to wear a new badge, recent
ly authorized by the war depart
ment. nccorditiK to Information re
ceived by former service men In
fiend. The badge is to be worn on
civilian clothes. It consists of a
"dexter eagle with wings displayed
perched within a ring which displays
seven white and six red vertical
stripes with a blue chief hearing
the words "National Defense.' the
dexter wings of the eagle behind the
ring, the sinister wing in front of
the ring."
The new badge may be worn only
by those who have served honorably
in time of war. those who have served
honorably in tlfVl'nited States mili
tary forces and have been trained
and qualified In the grade of private
or higher grade.
The new badge may soon be pur
chased In post exchanges, general
stores and commercial firms author
ized by the war department.

200 persons were injured, including
60 seriously, when a veranda col
lapsed during a parade of officers,
and sailors from the American fleet

The streets of Melbourne were gor
geously decorated for a fete in hoaoi
of the Americans who arrived with
a portion of the Pacific fleet this

When the veranda crashed, the
'parade hilled. The American .-aib.r.-
broke ranks and went to the assist
ance of the victims. Ambulances
clanged lo the scne and the "Cobs"
helped administer first aid.
When the last of the victims hail
been taken to hospitals, the crowd
; geve the Americans a tremendous
cheer and the parade was returned.

first proposed that Japanese be em
ployed on the "green chain." Toledo
business men declared themselves
against the employment of Japanese,

to find that the greater part of the
town's population still held their
objections to Japanese labor.
The Japanese were under contract
to receive $1 for an eight hour shift.
