FRIDAY, JULY 7. 1922 A PIONEER HISTORY SEK1ES Believing that its readers are deep ly Interested in the early history of Central Oregon and the Mend vicinity, The Bulletin has been for some time engaged in collecting facts on which to base a series of articles concerning those times. In Saturday's paper will appear the first of a series which will cover not only the facts of early dis covery and settlement here, but will endeavor to describe the thrilling oc currences of pioneer days. The series is not yet complete, and The Bulletin will welcome any stories which early settlers may write or tell, or which their families may wish to submit, bearing on these early times. Because of the interest recently created through the naming of Todd lake, formerly Lost lake, after John Y. Todd, pioneer settler here, a com prehensive biography of his life will be the first article. Todd was not the first settler on the Deschutes, but was one of the first to work toward future development of this territory: and the consistent pioneer spirit revealed in his life makes it one well worth recording. As few as four forest fires in the holiday period are too many when they are caused by careless campers or anglers. Fires caused by lightning are unavoidable. Every man made fire is avoidable. If we are to save our forests for timber and preserve the beauty of our lakes and streams, we must eliminate every man made fire. C5pp!irigRhijmQs IMP Signs of Age I know I'm in the yellow leaf, soon like the leaves I'll fall; that my remaining time is brief I have no doubt at all. For I can watch a baseball game as calmly as I'd view some women at a quilt ing frame kick up their howdydo. At baseball parks I spend some time, and yawn and slumber there, and when the umpire pulls a crime I do not seem to care. I do not long to see him banned as in the long ago; though bricks and bottles are at hand, no missiles do I throw. And when a player muffs the ball, which costs our boys the game, I feel no spasm, large 'or small, go sizzling through my frame. The southpaw pitcher makes a hit, but I can only yawn ; I've seen so many come and flit they shine and then they're gone! There is a chorus now of yells, throughout the baseball lot; the shortstop, who is wearing bells, has stopped a grounder hot. But I have seen so many stunts of players in their pride, who long since sailed, in ghostly punts, across the dark Styx tide. And still I would not be a frost, from life remain aloof, and so my ancient tile is tossed against the grand stand roof. ft.? m4fw jisi9janr Tlw WciiWo, bat rntnliiK lilt) Liberty Soon of great interest to the dairy 'former cream." That your newspapers are edu cators? They" develop, inform, leach and train. That industrial stability means prosperity. That the most efficient method to sell goods is newspaper advertising. Well planned ads sell the goods. That in many sections, large farm ing areas are being divided into smaller farniB which can be operated with much less outlay and consider ably more profit. That good hotels are a great ad vertisement for a city. Don't spend too much time cussing your hotels until you first try to help the hotel man make them better. If they don't try to keep them tip to date, then help Borne other fellow build one. That better dairying helps to make better business. That the dairy industry should re ceive more encouragement.
