Came the telephone to take us out of the seclusion we may have sought; the automobilo to make our travel more speedy and to keep the pedestrian on his mettle -when crossing the street, and now the airship to take away our last remaining feeling of security. To have a roof over one's heud used to mean that one was secure A man's house was his castle. Once at home he was safe, but now all has changed. At any moment an airplane may land in his attic or a dirigible come through into the dining room. Aviutors in para chutes will be dropping in to sup per. Always, we shall be in danger. The legal maxim has it that a man's ownership extends straight from the boundaries of his land "usque ad coelum" or translating roughly, "right into the sky." What a wide field is opened thereby for the law courts. Whoever crosses that land becomes a trespasser. Damages may be orily nominal but the owner may want to prevent any one from , gaining a prescriptive right and so will be forced to take bis case into the courts. , But how will be prove who the trespasser was? Will airplanes be licensed as automobiles are? And will it be compulsory to carry a number and a tail light and a muffler? Suppose rights of way are arranged : for the air routes which are prophecied, how will they be defined? What will the right of way agents have to pay? How will the air travellers be kept to them? .. But returning to the question of security in the home. Will not a new style of architecture become necessary? Roofs must be made stronger if they have to shed, ha loons as well as rain. Or, it may be, a new style of roof will be de vised, something running up to a sharp point which no aviator will care to light upon. Possibly something on that order will settle the difficulty. Aviators will fall at their own risk, and when, in the night, father hears a bumping and scraping on the roof he will not jump from his bed in alarm, but turning over, will mur mur - sleepily, "Another airman down. We'll bury him in the morning." BIG THUNDERSTORM VISITS PORTLAND (By United Press to The Bend Bulletin.) PORTLAND, July 23. A thun derstorm visited Portland this morn ing. Claps of thunder were fre quent. Phenomena of the kind are of rare occurrence here. Lightning struck the steel bridge, putting the draw out of commission and forcing ships to stay in their berths. A flagpole was splintered. Rain fell in torrents for a short time. " , BODY IS SHIPPED TO BE CREMATED The body of Howard L. Boyle, lumber salesman, of Greeley, Colo rado, who died here Monday of pneumonia, was shipped to Port land last night for cremation. CLOVERDALE SENDS ROAD DELEGATION CLOVERDALE, July 22.
