PAGE 4 THE BEND BULLETIN, DAILY EDITION, BEND, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 81, 1018 REAL GAS USED AT UNIVERSITY MEN AT OFFICERS' TRAINING CAMP ARE COMPELLED TO GO THROUGH GAS CHAMBER LO CAL MEN GET APPOINTMENTS. BRITISH GUN WITH CATERPILLAR WHEELS That the Bend men who are at tending the officers' training camp at Eugene are getting a real touch of war life and war training is the opin ion of J. C. Rhodes, who, In com pany with Mrs. Rhodes and several other Bend people, spent Sunday and part of Monday at Eugene watching the work of tho boys there. The party arrived in Eibgene on Saturday night and spent Sunday visiting with the boy. There was no military activity on this day, and only the trenches could be visited. On Monday 'morning, however, they had the opportunity of seeing the men in actual training, part of which included passing through the gas chamber. For this part of the train ing a portion of the trenches are set off and impregnated with chlorine gas, used to-extensively by the Ger mans in their offensives. Through this loaded trench the men in train ing are compelled to pass, with their gas masks adjusted. The real chlor ine gas, and no substitute, is used, Mr. Rhodes stating that a man inhal ing It will live only six seconds. The men from Bend have made a showing for themselves at this camp. Roy Anderson has received an ap pointment to the field artillery train ing camp at Camp Zachary Taylor, and will leave for training there as soon as he has completed his work at this camp. It fs expected that he will return to Bend and straighten up his affairs here before leaving. M. H. Morton of the Morton Drug company has received his appoint ment as first sergeant at the univer sity camp. The other members of the party who went from here, in cluding T. M. Foley, Ashley Forrest and W. G. Manning, are all interested in tho work and making a good showing. IllUll iv m m I BV fn 1 1 V I II tl U . IDEAS HARD TO ERADICATE Erroneous Geographical Notions That Have a Firm Hold on the Minds of Most People. It Is curious to note with what per Rlntency people will ndhere to current Ideas without ever thinking that these Ideas do not, under all circumstances, denote one and the same thing. As a matter of fact, the maximum heat Is "between" North and South viz, along the equator, and It Is as cold at the South Pole aM at tho North Pole. Also the words North and South are us rela tive terms as Bast and West, and do not, to everyone, convey the same Idea. To make this clear, let us suppose that A stands at the North Pole and, turning in the direction of the country from which he came, feels the wind blowing In his fact1, lie would, of Course, Claim that this wind was south erly, and nobody would dare contradict him, for does not the wind come from (Norway, which is south from the Pole? Ills companion. It, however, Who stands a little distance further off, let us say fit) steps beyond the Pole, on the hemisphere on which America Is situ ated, will Just as emphatically assert that this wlud Is northern, as It blows from the North Pole, and the snow flakes It carries after having pnssed the polar point no longer are directed toward the North, but the South. There is no use disputing; both are right and, although separated by a few steps only, thut which to A Is north Is to Ii south. Yiddish. Yiddish Is a dialect spoken by the Jews of central Europe, consisting of corrupted Hebrew with u large admix ture of German. It has been carried by Immigrants to Great Britain and this continent, and Is now of practical ly world-wide use. The old Hebrew Uncial, or Capital, letters are made to give way to a cursive or script letter In writing; and a regular written lan guage, and even n literature has come Into being. But for religious usage the ancient Hebraic form and words, em ployed In the written Torah or Law Is Strictly adhered to, and, It will be found as a rule that oven those who use Yiddish commonly, have also a familiarity with the ancient language of their race. Somewhat Expensive Error. A large steamer was once wrecked because one of the sailors was nomed West. The vessel was outward bound from Rotterdam, and the snllor was on deck polishing some brasswork. Suddenly the captain cnlled him, and told him to go below. The second officer on the bridge heard the captain call out the man's name, and thought It was an order to change the course of the ves sel to the west. He did so, and tho result was that the vessel ran onto a dangerous shoal. That mime cost the owners of the vessel the sum of $500,-000. Not Hatched. Visitor Has your little buby sister got any teeth? Tommy Oh, yes! I guess she's got them, but she ain't hatched 'em out yet." Something to sell? Advertise In The Bulletin's classified column. KISS REVIVES HIS COURAGE OPKUATIOX IS PERFORMED IX FRO XT LINE TREXCH DRESS ING STATIOX WITHOUT ANAES THETIC NURSE KISSES HIM. THE DALLES. Aug. 21. The wounded American was brought into the French dressing station In the Vosges. An Immediate operation was imperative. Through unforeseen cir cumstances there was no anaesthetic. Then a dainty little French nurse caught the situation. She must aid her American friend. She bent over and kissed the wounded man, placed her cheek against his dirty, bearded one and with her arm supported him. Tho man smiled gratefully. The operation was performed with .good results, although it was a serious one. The American's courage had been revived to bear the pain. This incident was related by Ser geant Jerry Gerrard of The Dalles In a letter home. Jerry claimed to be the first The Dalles man and pos sibly the first Oregonian to set foot on German soil in this war. His unit crossed tho border recently. WAR EXCHANGE SUGAR-SAVING CAXXIXG.
