The meat of a bog la from 70 to 80 '.per cent of the live weight Tbe 20 to 30 per cent that is classed as offal luakes the money for tbe packers. Ex clusive of condemnations by govern ment Inspectors, about 17 per cent of each carcaai Is lost at various stages of dressing and by evaporation In processing and curing, so that really only about GO per cent actually goes into cuts to be retailed to tbe con sumer. From tho cabins It Is about throe miles to tho falls, whlch4re about 110 tout high. It Is quite possible to take tho road on the north side of tho Tumalo crook and got within 'two mllus of the falls. A large part Is used In tbe making of brushes, nud tbe finer tbe bristle the higher priced brush Is pro duced. It is also curled and used for upholstering. Tbe waste waters are evaporated to a thick brown wax known as "stick" because of its adhesive properties. It la used In tbe manufacture of fertilizer, as it has a blgb nitrogen content. ' Bones are used in making phosphates for baking powder and other com pounds. Tbcy are also ground lnto( poultry feed, and a large tonnage finds Its way Into the fertilizer trade. Rones are also burned for charcoal for use In tbe purification of sirups In tbe manu facture of sugar. Boue ash is used In making crucibles for glassniaklng and metal refining. Tankage Is a bone and tissue sub stance that is taken from the tanks after tbe different parts are rendered for grease. It is used chiefly in stock and poultry feed. Joseph M.
