NATION/WORLD Wednesday, August 29, 2018 Hurricane’s death toll in Puerto Rico put at nearly 3,000 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico’s gov- ernor raised the U.S. territo- ry’s official death toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975 on Tuesday after an independent study found that the number of people who succumbed in the des- perate, sweltering after- math had been severely undercounted. The new estimate of nearly 3,000 dead in the six months after Maria devas- tated the island in Septem- ber 2017 and knocked out the entire electrical grid was made by researchers with the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. “We never anticipated a scenario of zero communica- tion, zero energy, zero high- way access,” Gov. Ricardo Rossello told reporters. “I think the lesson is to antic- ipate the worst. ... Yes, I made mistakes. Yes, in hind- sight, things could’ve been handled differently.” Tuesday’s finding is almost twice the govern- ment’s previous estimate, included in a recent report to Congress, that there were 1,427 more deaths than nor- mal in the three months after the storm. East Oregonian not swayed by Roy Oliver’s claim that he feared for his partner’s life when he fired into the vehicle as it drove away from a large house party in Balch Springs in April 2017. The gunfire killed Jor- dan Edwards, who was sitting in the front passenger seat. Gasps echoed around the courtroom as the verdict was read. Edwards’ relatives sobbed and hugged prose- cutors, waved their hands in the air and proclaimed Ex-Texas cop guilty of murder for killing unarmed black teen DALLAS (AP) — A white ex-police officer was convicted of murder Tues- day for fatally shooting a black, unarmed 15-year-old boy while firing into a car packed with teenagers in suburban Dallas, marking a rare guilty verdict in a police shooting case. Dallas County jurors were Page 7A “Thank you, Jesus!” after the jury left. Oliver and his part- ner were responding to a report of underage drink- ing at the house party. Police initially said the vehicle backed up toward officers “in an aggressive manner,” but later said that body- cam video showed the vehi- cle was moving forward as officers approached. Oliver was fired just days after the shooting. CHAMBER MEMBERS Wild Goose Designs 215 E.
