REGION Tuesday, June 5, 2018 East Oregonian HERMISTON MEETINGS Transportation provided, rules in place for Toyota Center graduation By JAYATI RAMAKRISHNAN East Oregonian Hermiston’s graduation this year will mark a lot of changes, both for the indi- viduals tossing their caps and for the school district itself. The 332 members of the class of 2018 will be the first to graduate at a venue out- side Hermiston, as their cer- emony will be held at the Toyota Center in Kennewick on Thursday. Billed by the school dis- trict as a decision meant to accommodate the grow- ing number of graduates and their families, the dis- trict is also providing trans- portation for those families to get to the venue, which is about 30 miles away from Hermiston. The Toyota Center is located at 7000 W. Gran- dridge Blvd., Kennewick, WA 99336. The district is provid- ing buses for parents to and from Kennewick, but district spokesperson Maria Duron said the high school already sent a letter informing par- ents that they need to sign up if they want to use school transportation. The deadline was May 11, she said, but if parents missed the deadline and still need transportation, they should contact counsel- ing secretary Tammy Gattis as soon as possible. Families taking school transportation to Kennewick need to be at the high school parking lot by 5:45 p.m. Gattis can be reached at 541-667-6125 or at tammy. gattis@hermistonsd.org. Graduates will be bused up to the Toyota Center on the day of graduation, and will need to be at the high school by 5 p.m. Graduation will also be live-streamed at the dis- trict’s YouTube channel. To find it, family members can search “HSD Communica- tions” on YouTube. Duron said there are some clothing requirements for graduating seniors. Those students are not allowed to wear shorts or flip-flops, and caps and gowns are to remain intact, with no addi- tional decorations. Though it’s been a com- mon practice at previ- ous graduations, Duron said things like noisemak- ers, silly string and confetti will not be allowed in the Toyota Center, and flow- ers are not allowed on the floor with graduates. Out- side food and beverages are also not allowed in the Toy- ota Center. “Due to the fact that there will be subsequent gradua- tions other than just ours, it is imperative that the above rules are followed,” Duron said in a written statement. A professional photogra- phy studio, LifeTouch, will be taking photos of individ- ual students during the cere- mony, and will be available for purchase. The after-graduation party will be at the Tri- City Court Club after the ceremony. Pendleton woman dies in Wallowa County rollover ENTERPRISE — A Pendleton woman died Sun- day in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 3 in Wallowa County. According to a press release from Oregon State Police, Joanne Norris, 62, was driving a 2005 Mer- cury sedan southbound on the highway about six miles north of Enterprise when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled. Emergency personnel responded at about 10:12 a.m. but Norris died at the scene. She was the only per- son in the vehicle. OSP is in charge of the investigation and were assisted by the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Depart- ment, ODOT, and Enterprise Fire Department. TOLLGATE — Two peo- ple were arrested at gunpoint as they left a cabin police say they were robbing. (541- 567-5521) Pendleton School Board to approve ‘status quo’ budget East Oregonian Following a tumultuous 2017-2018 budget season, the financial picture for the Pendleton School District’s 2018-2019 fiscal year looks a lot clearer. The district’s bud- get committee recently approved the $50.3 million budget, which is set to be adopted by the Pendleton School Board June 11. Budget highlights include a 2.1 percent cost- of-living salary increase for staff, a $125,000 increase in costs for the Public Employees Retirement Sys- tem, a $100,000 increase in technology costs, and $155,000 in expenditures to buy new curricula for ele- mentary school science and K-12 health. Beyond that, Budget Officer Michelle Jones described the budget as “status quo” based on the staffing levels and programs offered in 2017-2018. During the last budget cycle, the district struggled to maintain staffing lev- els as the Oregon Legisla- ture debated the education budget. The school board autho- rized 10 layoffs before a higher than expected state budget allowed them to hire four people back and create a new kindergarten teacher position. Happy 8th Birthday Kynlee!
