NORTHWEST East Oregonian Page 2A Tuesday, June 5, 2018 BRIEFLY Two children die in Wallowa County rafting accident TROY (AP) — Two young brothers died in a rafting accident over the weekend on the Grande Ronde River in Wallowa County. The Oregon State Police said Monday that the boys were rafting with their father when the raft hit a rock at Martins Misery Rapids and ejected the boys. The father jumped in but couldn’t find them in the swift-moving river. Other rafting groups found the boys but they could not be revived. More information was not immediately avail- able, including the ages of the boys or whether they were wearing life vests. The accident happened in Troy, a small commu- nity in northeastern Oregon near the border with Washington. Washington, South Korea residents among dead in crash CLATSKANIE (AP) — Authorities say three women and a boy were killed and several others injured when the minivan they were riding in col- lided with a pickup truck on a highway in north- west Oregon. Oregon State Police on Sunday said 44-year-old Yun Hee Lee and an unidentified juvenile male, both from Gig Harbor, Washington, were among those killed in Friday’s crash in Clatsop County. Also killed were two women from South Korea, 71-year- old Soon Ja Lim and 39-year-old Jung Hee Lee. The four were among eight people in a minivan traveling westbound on Highway 30 Friday night. State police say the minivan tried to turn left into the oncoming path of a pickup truck towing an empty horse trailer. Several people in the minivan and pickup truck were taken to local hospitals. Portland police say four people were arrested during the demonstrations near City Hall. Portland police arrest four during protests PORTLAND (AP) — Portland police say four people were arrested during demonstrations near City Hall. The dueling protests involved anti- facists known as antifa and right-wing groups. Some reports showed demonstra- tors punching and assaulting mem- bers of the opposing side on Sunday afternoon. A Portland police spokesman says some people were treated for injuries but no one needed to be taken to the hospital. The Oregonian /Oregon Live reported the dueling protests got under- way Sunday peacefully at first. Then there was shoving, a small bonfire was lit and punches were thrown. Police used pepper spray to quell the crowds as Patriot Prayer supporters started marching. Two of those arrested were facing disorderly conduct charges. One other was charged with failure to comply with an order. Charges against the fourth person were not immediately known. Motorcyclist dies in crash with bear, SUV in central Oregon WARM SPRINGS (AP) — A 39-year-old motor- cyclist has died after he struck a large bear on a Central Oregon highway and was ultimately hit by another vehicle. Oregon State Police says Rhett Larsen, of Bend, died at the scene of Saturday night’s crash on High- way 26 near Warm Springs. Authorities say Larsen struck the bear, which also died, when it ran onto the highway around 7 p.m. Police say Larsen was thrown from his motor- cycle and hit by a Ford SUV driving in the oppo- site direction. The SUV driver was flown to a hospital. State police did not immediately return a message Sunday seeking the driver’s condition. The collision closed the highway for several hours. Comcast settles $155M tax lawsuit By TOM JAMES Associated Press SALEM — Internet and cable television pro- vider Comcast has settled a long-running property tax dis- pute with the state of Oregon for $155 million, gaining a one-time discount but agree- ing to a more costly method of calculating its taxes. The settlement, which sends an infusion of cash to ten counties in the Willa- mette Valley, resolves a dis- pute dating to a 2009 decision to assess the company’s assets in the state as a whole, rather than piecemeal. The com- pany had argued that because it provides TV service, it was exempt from rules allowing the broader tax assessment on communication companies. Unlike local govern- ment tax assessments which count only tangible assets, so-called central assessment by the state’s revenue depart- ment looks at the value of the entire company, including intangible assets. The broader assessment included about an extra $700 million in assets, according to media reports at the time. The settlement amounts to about a 9 percent discount for the company: By paying $155.6 million, Comcast will erase about $170 million in back taxes, said Department of Revenue spokesman Der- rick Gasperini. As part of the settlement, Comcast agreed to accept the broader assess- ment, and the larger future tax bills it would generate. The settlement will be divided between the 10 coun- ties in the state where Com- cast has assessable property. Gov. Kate Brown’s office said in a statement that Brown had helped negotiate the deal, and urged local govern- ments to use the cash bump to pay down public pension obligations. 211 S.E. The agreement “gives local communities certainty around funding, (and) provides Com- cast predictability on property taxes,” Lopez wrote. A key issue in the dispute had been whether the internet giant qualified as a communi- cations company. That designation qualifies a company for central assess- ment by the state, and Com- cast had argued it was techni- cally exempt because it used its infrastructure primarily to provide television service. 2 8 a.m. 10 a.m. Noon 2 p.m. 4 p.m. 6 p.m. 0-2, Low 3-5, Moderate 6-7, High; 8-10, Very High; 11+, Extreme The higher the AccuWeather.com UV Index™ num- ber, the greater the need for eye and skin protection.
