ARRESTS, CITATIONS Friday •William Joshua Young, 42, of Hermiston, is in jail after two men told police he held a knife to one of their throats. Friday at 4:43 p.m. the men, ages 26 and 27, told police they were together on the Oxbow Trail near Harrison Park near the intersection of Southwest 13th Street and West Madrona Avenue, according to the written statement from Hermiston police Lt. Randy Studebaker. The pair encountered Young, who was sitting along the trail with his dog and consuming alcohol. The men believed he was visibly intoxicated, Studebaker reported. As they passed by, Young struck up a conversation with them, then began “making statements the men believed sounded irrational and paranoid.” Young then pulled a folding knife and repeatedly held it to the throat of one of the men, according to their reports, while saying he intended to kill somebody. Studebaker stated the victim pushed the knife away from his throat and received a minor cut to one finger that did not require medical attention. A jogger in the area distracted Young, according to Studebaker, and the men made their getaway and called police. Officers responded but did not find Young. By coincidence, a woman approached the two men, said she was looking for her husband and described Young. That led police to find Young at his home and arrest him for menacing and on unrelated warrant from Jackson County. Police booked him into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. Saturday •Hermiston police arrested Hugo Sanchez Ochoa, 28, no address provided, for possession of meth and on a warrant for failure to appear. •The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jordyn Nichole Smith, 22, of Hermiston, for fourth-degree assault and third-de- gree vandalism. •Milton-Freewater police arrested Daniel Lee Strain, 30, of Weston, for possession of meth, violating parole and on a warrant for failure to appear. Sunday •Cops mean it when they say, “Don’t lie to me.” Oregon State Police trooper Ryan Sharp at about 4:25 p.m. stopped a blue Honda Civic for a traffic violation on the east- bound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 206, a few miles west of Pendleton. The driver claimed he did not have identification with him and the car was his brother’s, according to state police. Sharp warned the driver about lying to him, and the driver stuck to his story. Sharp accessed driver’s license photos for the man and his brother and “was able to clearly determine he was lying about who he said he was,” according to state police. The trooper confronted Cruz Castellanos, 22, of Hermiston, about the lying, and he finally said he was the owner of the car but lied because his license was suspended. Sharp arrested Castellanos for driving while suspended and giving false information to police, a misdemeanor.
