ARRESTS, CITATIONS Monday •Oregon State Police cited Steven Anthony Castillo, 22, of Umatilla, for speeding and a bit more. According to state police, Castillo was driving a green Honda Civic on Highway 395 near Umatilla. The car caught the attention of trooper John Lombardi at 2:38 p.m. because it was going 90 mph on the 55 mph road. Castillo also received a ticket for driving while suspended, which stemmed from driving uninsured three years ago. And Castillo got one more ticket — for using a mobile electronic device while driving (or while violating the basic rule, perhaps). BMCC appoints replacement for east Hermiston seat Home Health plans open house at new office HERMISTON — East Hermiston has a new representative on the Blue Mountain Community College Board of Education. According to a Tuesday press release, BMCC announced the appointment of Don Rice of Hermiston to the board’s Zone 5 seat. Rice replaces former board member Eddie de la Cruz, who resigned from the board and moved to Texas in 2016. Rice is the director of North American operations for GreenWood Resources in Boardman and has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from Washington State University. All six of his children have used the community college system, two of whom attended BMCC. Rice’s term expires in 2019 and will require he run for election if he wants to stay on the board. HEPPNER — The public is invited to stop in to see the new office at Pioneer Memorial Home Health and Hospice. An open house is planned Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 162 N. Main St., Heppner. Refreshments will be served. State to use child hearsay in sex crimes case One teen still in hospital after Thursday car crash STANFIELD — One teenager injured in a crash last week near Stanfield remains in the hospital and another is back at home. Hailee Eaton, 19, of Hermiston was driving south on South Edwards Road in a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero on Thursday morning when she crashed into a 1993 Chevrolet pickup driven by Jarrett Byrd, 17, from Stanfield, who was heading west on Feedville. Both were taken by ambulance to Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston. Byrd has been released, according to Umatilla County Undersheriff Jim Littlefield, but Eaton remains at the hospital with injuries to her pelvis, spleen, kidney, as well as a Contributed Photo Don Rice, left, is sworn onto the Blue Mountain Community College Board of Education by board Chair Chris Brown, right, as BMCC President looks on at a BMCC board meeting in Milton- Freewater Nov. 8. broken rib. Littlefield said the sheriff’s office hopes to know more about the cause of the crash after speaking with Eaton. There have been fatal crashes at the same intersection, which has a stop sign on South Edwards but not Feedville, on Sept. 20, 2016 and March 19, 2014. HEPPNER — The Morrow County District Attorney’s Office plans to use child hearsay in the prosecution of sex crimes defendant Corey Scott Baker of Ione. Baker, 40, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree rape and sexual abuse. The state alleged he raped and molested a girl younger than 12 in 2016. Richard Tovey, deputy district attorney, notified the circuit court on Thursday the prosecution intends to use hearsay from a child in the case “regarding the acts of abuse by defendant.” The production of medical records also could be a matter in the case. Defense attorney Nicolas Patterson filed a motion on Oct. 20 for medical records from Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston, of the girl who accused Baker of the crimes. Tovey has not opposed the motion. The court will consider the request at a hearing on Nov. 30, unless the defense obtains the materials before then. The court schedule shows Baker has a trial readiness hearing on Jan. 11. ——— Briefs are compiled from staff and wire reports, and press releases.
