Jean Segura added two hits and scored twice as Seattle started a six-game trip with its third win in four games. Paxton (8-3) struck out nine while pitching six effec- tive innings in his third straight victory. Cano, who Seattle went deep in the 10th inning of the American League’s 2-1 victory Tuesday night in Miami, Chicago walked on four pitches in the fi rst. He came up again with two on and one out in the third and drove James Shields’ fi rst pitch off the top of the wall in right-center for his 18th homer, giving the Mari- ners a 3-1 lead. The 34-year-old Cano is batting .413 (38 for 92) with six homers and 20 RBIs in his career against Shields (2-2). Fellow All-Star Avisail Garcia had two hits, swiped two bases and scored twice for the last-place White Sox, who have dropped fi ve of six. It was Chicago’s fi rst game since it traded left-hander Jose Quintana to the crosstown Cubs on Thursday. “Everybody understands the impact that he’s made to us as a club, but they also understand that we’ve got to keep playing,” manager Rick Renteria said. “I mean, the season’s not going to stop. They know they have to go out there and do what they’re supposed to do and contribute to their teammates and to the club.” The White Sox pulled within one on Matt Davidson’s double in the fourth. But Segura doubled and scored on Shields’ wild pitch in the fi fth, making it 4-2 Mariners. That was more than enough for Paxton, who allowed fi ve hits and walked none. He was working as a batting practice pitcher and assisting with other jobs. Cabrera replaces Mike Hampton, who resigned on Sunday. REDMOND — The Pepsi Diamondjaxx had two rough days in central Oregon going 1-3 in a pair of doubleheaders against Ridgeview and Redmond. The Pendleton 16U American Legion team’s only win came in the second game against Ridgeview on Thursday 9-7. They lost the opener 10-4, and were swept on Friday by Redmond 4-3, 12-7. In the win, the Diamondjaxx scored three runs in the sixth, then three more in the seventh to jump into the lead, then Ty Beers retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh. Caden Primus’ double allowed Nat Hunsaker to tie the score 7-7, then Tanner Sweek singled, followed by a single from Tyler Browning. Primus scored the go-ahead run, and although Sweek was out at the plate, Browning was able to score on an error to make it 9-7. Beers struck out two and walked none while allowing three runs on two hits in two innings of work on the mound. He relieved Tucker Zander, who threw the fi rst fi ve and struck out eight, walked three and allowed four runs on fi ve hits. Hitting leaders in the game were Browning (2 for 2, 2 RBI), Beers (2 for 3, 2 RBI) and Sweek (2 for 3). In the fi rst game, Ridgeview scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back. Hunsaker had a big game in the loss, going 3 for 4 with two RBI while hitting a double and two triples, and Sweek struck out seven on the mound but allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Hunsaker continued his strong hitting on Friday and doubled in both games against Redmond while going a combined 3 for 5 with two RBI. (AP) — Kyle Larson has made a habit of fl unking NASCAR inspection. Knocked from the top of the points standings this week because of an inspection failure, Larson was stripped of his pole Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and had his winning time tossed out for yet another infraction. He will start at the rear of the fi eld in Sunday’s Larson Cup race. Ex-player sues Ohio State for using image in marketing COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — One of Ohio State’s most famous football stars sued the university Friday over a marketing program he says used athletes’ images without permission and robbed them of compensation. Linebacker Chris Spielman fi led the class-action lawsuit in federal court in Columbus on behalf of current and former Ohio State football players. The antitrust complaint targets Ohio State marketing programs and contracts that promote the university using likenesses of athletes, including a Honda-sponsored program of 64 banners hung around Ohio Stadium featuring photos of former players. In addition to Spielman, some of the other Ohio State greats whose pictures appear on those banners include running back Archie Griffi n, lineman Jim Stillwagon, and safety Mike Doss.
