Blomgren Dwight Durward Crow Hospital staff award local scholarships Salem September 6, 1948 – May 24, 2017 Seaside April 11, 1945-May 24, 2017 PENDLETON — The medical staff of CHI St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton has announced the 2017 recipients of the Medical Staff of CHI St. Anthony Hospital Human Health Science Schol- arships. These scholarships are funded by physi- cians, surgeons, anesthetists, Lehnert dentists, and Lapp podiatrists prac- ticing at CHI St. Anthony Hospital to support the aspirations of outstanding local area high school graduating seniors who plan to pursue careers Wolotira in medicine, Rinehart nursing, and related healthcare occupations. Five students awarded a $1,500 scholarship are Brooke Lapp, Raylee Lehnert, Abby Rinehart, and Jona- thon Wolotira, all of Pendleton High School, and Caiden Marks of Gris- wold High School. Seven students awarded a $750 scholarship are Kale’a Broker, Sydney Galloway, Lincoln Johnson, Stephan Marks Machado Jr., Baylie Paul and Jona- than Stuvland, all of Pendleton High School, and Bailey Hillmick of Weston-McEwen High School. Jerald R. Blomgren died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, in Salem, Oregon – his home for more than 30 years – at age 68. He was born in Pendleton, Oregon, on Sept. 6, 1948. He was the son of Ernest and Florence Blomgren. The Blomgren family moved to Seattle when Jerry was a young boy, and he grew up with his two brothers, David and Ray, and his sister Janis in Normandy Park. The family moved to the Chicago area when Jerry was 14. He graduated from Deerfield High School in 1966 before heading west, where he grad- uated from Yakima Valley Community College. Jerry served in the U.S. Army as a communications specialist, including a year in Vietnam in 1970. He worked at the Eastern Oregon Hospital and Training Center in Pend- leton for many years before moving to Salem, where he was an occupational therapist at Fairview Training Center and then at a group home. He retired in 2015, after assisting the mentally and physically chal- lenged for more than 40 years. Jerry was an avid reader. His home is filled with books of every interest, from astronomy to historical fiction to sports. He was a constant patron of the Salem Public Library. He loved the Chicago Cubs, and his family is grateful the Cubbies ended their 108-year drought while he was alive to enjoy it. He is survived by siblings David Blomgren, Janis Lee, Ray Blomgren, Karen Davis and Larry Wahl. A family memorial service will be held this summer in Seattle. Jerry’s ashes will find a final resting place in Puget Sound. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. He was born on April 11, 1945, in Spokane, Wash., the son of Earl and Donna Lovelace Crow. He was raised in Hermiston and received his education there. As a kitchen help employee during his working years he was employed at the State Hospital in Pendleton, Fairview, and also worked for the Forest Service at Sand Lake. He also worked at Crow a furniture factory in Pilot Rock and the Army Depot in Hermiston. He retired from the Fairview State Hospital. Mr. Crow came to the Seaside area from Waldport, Ore., in 2009. Over the years he enjoyed jewelry making, fishing, crabbing, beach walking, and bodybuilding. He was also an accomplished bull rider, stock car racer, motorcycle racer, arm wrestler, and boxer.
