SPORTS East Oregonian Page 2B NHL Playoffs Senators blow out Penguins at home Associated Press OTTAWA, Ontario — Marc Methot, Derick Brassard and Zack Smith scored in a 2:18 span midway through the first period to chase goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and the Ottawa Senators beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 on Wednesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Game 3 Conference finals. Mike Hoffman opened the scoring 48 seconds in, and Pittsburgh the Senators blew it open against the sluggish Penguins a few minutes later with the fastest three goals Ottawa in team playoff history. Kyle Turris made it 5-0 late in the second period. Sidney Crosby ended Craig Anderson’s shutout bid with a power- play goal in the third. Anderson finished with 25 saves. Fleury allowed four goals on nine shots, and Matthew Murray made 19 saves in relief. Game 4 is Friday night in Ottawa. Hosting their first Eastern Conference final game in 10 years, the Sens came out flying. Hoffman got it going by capitalizing on Turris’ shot that bounced awkwardly wide of the goal. Hoffman stuffed the shot, standing to the left of the goal, just between the post and right pad of Fleury. In question now is whether coach Mike Sullivan turns to Murray, who helped deliver the Pens a Cup last season and was excellent in his first full NHL season, for Game 4 or goes back to Fleury. 1 5 BRIEFLY Buckaroo boosters donate money for new football/ soccer scoreboard PENDLETON — The athletic field behind Pendleton High School will be getting an even bigger facelift. The Buckaroo Booster Club recently pledged a $250,000 donation to the school to cover the cost of a brand new scoreboard at the field that will include formatting for both soccer and football use. This comes on the heels of the Pendleton School Board pledging a portion of the remaining $1.9 million from its capital improvement bond back in March to resurface the track as well as possibly adding permanent lighting. The field is currently used for high school and youth football practices in the fall and track & field practices and events such as the annual Buck Track Classic in the spring. Umatilla superintendent appointed to OSAA executive board UMATILLA — Heidi Sipe, superintendent of Umatilla School District, will spend the next three years helping guide the Oregon Schools Activities Association. At the OSAA’s executive board meeting on May 8, Sipe was appointed to a position on the board as a 3A/2A/1A at-large member. Sipe will be filling the spot vacated by Blanchet Catholic School President Tony Guevara. She will serve a three-year term beginning with the 2017-18 year. OSAA levies heavy fines on Stanfield Secondary STANFIELD — The OSAA fined Stanfield Secondary School a total of $1,500 for three rules violations — two of which pertained to the boys basketball program. The two fines came because of the Rule of Two practice limitations. The first charge was the head boys coach having more than two high school players at a middle school practice which brough a $500 fine. The second was an assistant coach that coached more than two high school players in a two-day tournament, which came with a $750 fine and a two game suspension to start the 2017-18 season for the assistant coach. The third fine was for the Stanfield band, a $250 charge handed out because the band competed prior to becoming an OSAA competing member. —East Oregonian Thursday, May 18, 2017 NBA Playoffs Cavs show no signs of rust, blow by Celtics By KYLE HIGHTOWER Associated Press BOSTON — LeBron James had 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics 117-104 on Wednesday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Confer- ence finals. Kevin Love, who averaged a quiet 13.8 points in the first two rounds, added a playoff career-high 32 points and had 12 rebounds to help the Cavaliers improve to 9-0 in the first three rounds of the playoffs. They opened 10-0 last season en route to their first NBA title. James scored at will in the first half and the Cavs built a 26-point lead. Love opened up the floor for James, burying outside jumpers and forcing Boston to leave defenders one-on-one with James. Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder led the Celtics with 21 points each. Isaiah Thomas had 17 points. Boston missed 11 of its first 14 shots. AP Photo/Charles Krupa Boston. Things got a little testy in the third quarter when Boston’s Marcus Smart and Cleveland’s Tristan Thompson got nose-to- nose and had to be separated by referees. Some jawing continued briefly before James stepped in to pull Thompson away. Smart and Thompson were called for double technical on the play, but got tangled again a few minutes later. This time, Smart fell to the floor during that exchange, drawing a foul on Thompson. The Celtics found some energy after the incident, closing the third quarter on an 11-3 run to pull to 92-75. It didn’t last long, though, as the Cavs quickly got the lead back up to 20. James picked apart every defender that the Celtics threw at him in the first half. He backed down defenders to set up 15-foot fade away jumpers. CLASS 4A The Mac-Hi Pioneers are taking just three athletes to the state meet but have a great shot at some medals as Bianca Garcia has the No. 3 qualifying girls’ javelin thrown and Landon Warne enters ranked No. 5 in boys’ discus. Warne will also compete in shot put, and Mac-Hi will also be represented by Camille Riley in girls’ pole vault. Like the 5A meet, the 4A meet will be held Friday-Saturday. CLASS 3A Riverside, Irrigon and Umatilla should all be able to grab a few medals and Umatilla’s Julian Gutierrez is the top-ranked boys’ high jumper headed into the first day of action today. The Riverside boys’ 4x100 relay team is seeded second, as is Irrigon’s Ana Zacarias in the girls’ 100. Zacarias is also seeded fourth in the 200. Riverside’s Faith Rosen is the third-ranked girls’ 100 hurdler, and fellow Pirate Racky Pindy enters the 400 preliminaries in the fourth spot. Umatilla’s Patty Burres is fifth in the 100. Irrigon’s Justin Iveson also holds a four-seed in the boys’ triple jump. Seeded fifth are Riverside’s David Rodriguez in the 300 hurdles, Ricardo Mendoza in discus and Umatil- la’s Alec Williams in shot put. The 3A meet begins today and finishes on Friday. CLASS 2A Pilot Rock’s Abby Rigby is poised for perhaps the strongest state meet of any local as she enters the 2A preliminaries seeded first in the 100, 200 and 400. Her teammate Rachel Will- ingham is seeded second in triple jump and fifth in the 300, and the Pilot Rock 4x100 relay is the third seed. Weston-McEwen has several highly seeded athletes and Hayden Scott is the runner to beat in both the boys’ 1,500 and 800. His brother Kirk is seeded second in javelin, third in discus and fourth in shot put, and Jacob Speed has the No. 3 seed in the 200. Their boys’ 4x400 relay is also seeded third, as are Bryce Thul and Maddi Muilenburg in girls’ long jump and javelin, respectively. Heppner’s top title hopeful is third-seeded shot putter Derek Howard. The 2A meet begins today and finishes Friday. CLASS 1A Arlington’s Thomas and Benjamin Evans are the top two javelin throwers in the state going into the 1A boys’ javelin prelims. They’ve got Ione’s Cord Flynn looking to track them down as the No. 4 seed, though. Condon/Wheeler’s Jake Bold is seeded third in the high jump, the Helix girls 4x400 relay is also seeded third, and so are Helix’s Kailey Mize in girls’ discus and Condon/Wheeler’s Christine Segura in long jump. The 1A meet begins this morning and will finish up on Friday. MARINERS: Gaviglio to make first career start vs. White Sox Continued from 1B start in 58 career appearances, joined the Mariners when he was selected from Triple-A Tacoma on May 7. He gave up seven hits and three runs over five innings in his previous start at Toronto on Friday. He quickly showed this time out would be different, retiring the first six batters of the game with three strikeouts. He walked just two, one of them coming in the eighth to the final batter he faced. James Pazos relieved Bergman in the eighth and finished the game, retiring all five of his batters. Bergman earned his first win since May 5, 2016, as a member of the Rockies against San Francisco. The Mariners took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Ben Gamel’s drive skipped past right fielder Matt Joyce to the wall for a triple, and Cruz drove him in with a sacrifice to right. Seattle added three runs in the fifth. Hahn walked Boog Powell to lead off, followed by Guillermo Heredia’s single. A sacrifice bunt by Tuffy Gosewisch moved the runners to second and third, setting up Segura’s two-run single up the middle. Center fielder Mark Canha let Gamel’s fly ball pop out of his glove for a two-base error, and Cruz drove in another run with an RBI groundout. TRAINERS ROOM Oakland: Yonder Alonso was pulled from the game in the seventh inning with left knee soreness. ROSTER MOVES Before the game, Seattle recalled RHP Casey Lawrence from Triple-A Tacoma and optioned RHP Chase De Jong to Tacoma. Lawrence was claimed off waivers from Toronto last week. He was 0-3 with an 8.78 ERA for the Blue Jays. De Jong is 0-3 with a 7.40 ERA in six games for the Mariners. UP NEXT Mariners: RHP Sam Gaviglio (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will make his first career start to open Seattle’s home series against the White Sox. Gaviglio’s only major league appearance was May 11, when he gave up one run and two hits in two innings at Toronto.
