SPORTS Friday, April 21, 2017 NHL Playoffs Nashville finishes off sweep of Chicago Associated Press Nash- ville’s Ryan Johansen (92) cele- brates af- ter a goal during Game 4 of a playoff series on Thursday in Nash- ville. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Roman Josi scored twice, Pekka Rinne had 30 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on Thursday night to complete a surprising sweep of the Western Conference’s top seed. Colton Sissons also scored and Viktor Arvidsson added an empty-net goal as Nashville completed the franchise’s first playoff sweep. Led by Rinne’s shutouts in the first two games, the Predators limited the high- scoring Blackhawks to just three goals in 13 periods. Chicago became the first No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round since the Los Angeles Kings knocked off the Vancouver Canucks on their way to the Stanley Cup title in 2012. Chicago’s second straight first-round exit followed a regular season in which the Blackhawks went 50-23-9 and recorded 109 points, the second-highest total in fran- chise history. It was the first time a No. 1 seed was swept in the first round since the NHL adopted its current playoff format in 1994. Jonathan Toews scored in the third period for Chicago, and Corey Crawford had 22 saves. ———— PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby and Scott Wilson scored 51 seconds apart in the third period, helping the Penguins eliminate the Blue Jackets in Game 5 of their first- round series. Bryan Rust scored twice for Pittsburgh, Phil Kessel added his second of the playoffs and Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 49 saves. The defending AP Photo/Mark Humphrey Stanley Cup champions will face the winner of the Toron- to-Washington series in the conference semifinals starting next week. William Karlsson and Boone Jenner scored for the Blue Jackets, but Sergei Bobrovsky stopped just 27 of 32 shots to finish a forgettable series. ———— RANGERS 3, CANA- DIENS 2, OT MONTREAL (AP) — Mika Zibanejad scored at 14:22 of overtime, lifting the Rangers to a big win in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Chris Kreider’s shot on a rush went off Alexei Emelin’s stick right to Zibanejad for a shot into an open side. The Rangers grabbed a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. They can advance with a win in Game 6 on Saturday. Jesper Fast and Brady Skjei also scored for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves. Artturi Lehkonen scored and set up a goal by Brendan Gallagher in the first period for Montreal. Carey Price had 33 stops. ———— EDMONTON 4, SAN JOSE 3, OT EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — David Desharnais scored late in the first overtime to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Sharks on Thursday night, pushing San Jose to the brink of elimination in the NHL playoffs. Desharnais, in the slot, one-timed a Leon Draisaitl cross-ice pass past Sharks goaltender Martin Jones to cap an overtime session dominated by Edmonton. The Oilers lead the Western Conference quarterfinal series 3-2 with Game 6 Saturday night in San Jose. The series winner takes on the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2. Patrick Maroon, Mark Letestu, and Oscar Klefbom also scored for Edmonton. Mikkel Boedker, Patrick Marleau, and David Schlemko had goals for San Jose. The Oilers — looking for a bounce-back game after a 7-0 beat-down by the Sharks in Game 4 — dominated the first 10 minutes, energized by the deafening roar of the orange and blue-clad fans at Rogers Place. East Oregonian Page 3B NBA Playoffs Cavs stun Pacers, take 3-0 lead Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS — LeBron James finished with 41 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, and the Cleveland Cava- liers set an NBA postseason record by erasing a 25-point halftime deficit to beat the Indiana Pacers 119-114 on Thursday night and take a 3-0 lead. James passed Kobe Bryant for No. 3 on the NBA’s career playoff scoring list and tied another NBA record by winning his 20th consecutive first- round game. The Cavaliers will try to sweep the series Sunday. The incredible rally ruined Paul George’s big night. He had 36 points, a playoff career-high 15 rebounds and nine assists. Cleveland trailed by 26 in the first half and was still down 74-49 at halftime. The largest halftime deficit overcome to win a playoff game had been 21 points by Baltimore against Philadelphia in 1948. ———— BUCKS 104, RAPTORS 77 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Khris Middleton scored 20 points and Milwaukee overwhelmed cold- shooting Toronto to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Greg Monroe added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Bucks, who held DeMar DeRozan without a basket and never looked back after leading by 20 points after the first quarter. Making this blowout even more impressive was that they barely needed All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo. He finished with 19 points and eight boards. Game 4 is Saturday back at the Bradley Center. With raucous fans wearing black Bucks giveaway T-shirts to match the players’ uniforms, Milwaukee put on a dominating display of basketball worthy of the team’s “Fear the Deer” slogan. The Raptors looked frazzled after shooting 4 of 18 in the first quarter. AP Photo/Darron Cummings Cleveland’s LeBron James dunks during Game 3 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the In- diana on Thursday in Indianapolis. Kyle Lowry had 13 points. ———— GRIZZLIES 105, SPURS 94 MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Mike Conley scored 24 points and handed out eight assists as the Memphis Griz- zlies snapped a 10-game postseason skid against San Antonio by routing the Spurs 105-94 on Thursday night. The Grizzlies pulled within 2-1 in this first-round Western Conference series, giving first-year coach David Fizdale his first postseason victory. This also marked the Grizzlies’ first win over the Spurs in the playoffs since April 2011, when Memphis beat San Antonio in six games. Game 4 is Saturday night. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph each scored 21 points for Memphis, which outscored San Antonio 31-17 in the third quarter and led by as much as 22 in the second half. Kawhi Leonard, who scored 32 and 37 in the first two games, was held to 18. LaMarcus Aldridge added 16, and Kyle Anderson had 15.
