Oregon MBB reserve seeking possible transfer EUGENE — The mass exodus from the Oregon men’s basketball team keeps on coming. Junior center Kavell Bigby-Williams asked for, and was granted, a release from his scholarship by the school with the purposes of seeking a transfer. The 6-foot-10 reserve center averaged 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in just under 10 minutes per game last season. Although he was granted the release, a school spokesman said on Thursday that Bigby-Williams has not yet decided whether he will actually transfer, but is exploring his options. The school said he will meet with head coach Dana Altman next week. If he does transfer, Bigby-Williams will join Dillon Brooks, Tyler Dorsey, Jordan Bell, and Casey Benson as early exits from last year’s team. MARINERS: Iwakuma starts today Continued from 1B homer for Seattle in the sixth against Frankie Montas. Adam Rosales had an RBI single and sacrifice fly and Ryon Healy added an RBI single among his three hits as Oakland erased an early 3-0 deficit then held on. Rajai Davis’ RBI groundout in the sixth was the go-ahead run. Seattle starter James Paxton’s scoreless innings streak to begin the year ended at 23 when Oakland got on the board in the third. He struck out eight over 4 1-3 innings. Paxton allowed more than two runs in a road start against the AL West for only the fourth time in 12 outings. TRAINER’S ROOM DAWGS: Next play at Madras on Saturday afternoon Continued from 1B losing in their first set 6-1, the Bulldogs trailed 4-1 in the second set before rallying to win after an 8-6 tiebreak. “We had to pull one out of thin air pretty fast,” Morris said. “The wind was a little bit of a factor, but we were just in our own heads. (The Dalles) put up a heck of a fight and we just made mistake after mistake.” “They needed to change their mindset and they were able to do that and come up with a big win for us,” West said. They won the tiebreaker set 10-6 with some strong play at the net, and seemed to keep each other enter- tained between points with their court banter. “I’ve just been recently getting more aggressive, but in this game it definitely helped,” said Morris. “We have a lot of fun with it. We get along pretty well, we definitely help each other Staff photo by E.J. The Dalles freshman Quinn Wilson won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 over Jose Gonzalez, and the River- hawks prevailed in three-set wins at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles. “They had some really good points,” West said of the players that suffered losses. “What we’ve been working on has shown through. NFL: Byes will occur Weeks 5 through Week 11 Continued from 1B their new stadium in an NFC championship rematch with Green Bay on Sunday night in Week 2. Atlanta has five prime-time games, the same number as New England. The Super Bowl rematch comes Sunday night, Oct. 22. StubHub Center, the new and temporary home of the Chargers, will have its first regular-season contest in Week 2 when Miami visits. Every team except Cleve- land and Jacksonville will get prime-time exposure. Neither of those clubs has a Thursday game, either. It’s the first time since the league went to a full season of Thursday night that clubs have been omitted. Once again, Sunday nights will have flexible scheduling, from Weeks 10 through 15 and for the final weekend. Also, two of the five Sunday night matchups in Weeks 5 through 9 can be flexed. Byes will occur Weeks 5 through 11. While three-game road Friday, April 21, 2017 or home strings once were taboo in the league, they are common now. Half of the teams have one or other, with five having both: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Oakland, San Francisco and Cincinnati. The Bengals play at Jackson- ville, Tennessee and Denver, then home with Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Chicago. Mariners: SS Jean Segura is set to be designated hitter at Double-A Arkansas on Friday as he rehabs a strained right hamstring that landed him on the 10-day disabled list April 11. He will play there through the weekend. “He feels good, ready to get back in there,” manager Scott Servais said. Athletics: SS Marcus Semien returned to the ballpark after undergoing surgery Tuesday on his fractured right wrist that included inserting a pin. He will soon begin using a splint. “Hopefully we can do another CT scan sooner than six weeks because it looked so good,” he said. “Obviously I can’t use my right hand right now. I’m getting dressed with one hand, I’m eating with my left hand. I can’t hold my son.” ... C Stephen Vogt sat for a second straight day against a lefty starter but will play again Friday night. ... Oakland 2016 second-round pick RHP Daulton Jefferies will undergo Tommy John surgery. ... The A’s optioned C Bruce Maxwell to Nashville to make room for Valdez. UP NEXT Mariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1, 5.40 ERA) — a 16-game winner last year — tries again for his first win of the season in his fourth start of 2017. Athletics: LHP Sean Manaea (0-1, 5.51) didn’t allow a hit over five innings of a 10-6 A’s loss last Saturday to Houston. Athlete of the Week Twenty questions with Pendleton’s Nick Bower East Oregonian PENDLETON — The Pendleton baseball team started its league schedule on Saturday in a big way, sweeping The Dalles in a doubleheader with 7-6 and 13-7 victories. Junior Nick Bower played a big part in those wins for the Buckaroos. He smacked a team-best five hits between the two games with a double and a triple, tallied four RBIs and also scored the game-winning run in Game 1 off of a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. For his efforts, Bower is the East Oregonian Athlete of the Week for the week of Apr. 10-15. ————— EO: How old were you when you first started playing sports? NB: Competitively probably six or seven, but I’ve had a ball in my hand probably since I was two. What was the first sport you remember playing? Baseball because I couldn’t play tackle foot- ball until third grade. What is your favorite sport to play? Baseball and football are equal, it just depends on what season I’m in. What’s a better feeling, throwing a touchdown pass or driving in a run with a big hit? I’d say a touchdown, being under the lights and hearing the crowd cheer is pretty special. Do you have a favorite professional baseball team? I actually don’t watch baseball much, which I know is weird. Watching baseball is kind of boring, but I’ll go Mariners. Who is your favorite athlete to watch? LeBron James no doubt about it. Do you have other hobbies outside of sports? I like to hunt, spend time with friends, going on road trips. What is your favorite hunting season? Deer for sure. Have your thought about your post-high school plans yet? I’d like to go to college and play either football or baseball whatever opportu- nity comes. What is your dream job? I’d like to become a physical therapist. What is your favorite class in school? History Who is your favorite teacher at Pendleton? Justin Adams, he was my business teacher freshman and sophomore year. What’s your favorite part about growing up in Pendleton? I love the small-town feel around. I feel like I know pretty much every- body here I have a ton of friends, it’s a great place to grow up and I hope to raise a family in a place like this. What is your place to visit in Oregon? I like Bend a lot. What is your favorite movie? Coach Carter What is your favorite food? Steak What is your favorite sunflower seed flavor to snack on during baseball season? Spitz’s cracked pepper What is your favorite local restaurant? Mazatlan What is your least favorite food? Asparagus, it’s terrible. If you could change one thing about Pendleton High School what would it be? I would extend our lunch period 10 minutes because I’m always rushing to get back on time. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Nick Bower Pendleton Baseball, Junior Bower helped his Buckaroos to a pair of wins over The Dalles on Saturday as he tallied fi ve hits on the day with a triple and a double, four RBI, and scored the winning run in Game 1.
