Page 6A TV TIME East Oregonian Senate votes to kill privacy rules guarding your online information NEW YORK (AP) — The Senate voted to kill Obama-era online privacy regulations , a first step toward allowing internet providers such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon to sell your browsing habits and other personal information as they expand their own online ad businesses. Those rules, not yet in effect, would have required internet providers to ask your permission before sharing your personal information. That’s a much stronger privacy-protection weapon than letting them use your data until you tell them to stop. As anyone who has ever tried to stop getting targeted ads on the internet knows, opting out is hard. Without those protections, consumer advocates fear that broadband providers will be able to do what they like with people’s data. “Advertisers and marketers are lining up to get access to all the information that’s now available about us,” said Jeff Chester of the Center for Digital Democracy, which advocates for tougher internet privacy measures. Of course, Google and Facebook already track you. But proponents of the privacy measure argued that the company that sells you your internet connection can see even more about you: every website you visit, every app that sends or receives data, everyone you email and many that you message. Telecom companies argue that companies like Google know far more about users than they do. Consumer advocates also point out that it can be hard, in many areas of the country, to dump your cable or phone company for another one if you don’t like its practices. Of course, it’s also hard to stop using Google or Facebook. Undoing the Federal Communications Commission’s regulation leaves people’s online information in a murky area. Today, you can tell a broadband provider not to use your data. Experts say federal law still requires broadband providers to protect customer information — but it doesn’t spell out how or what companies must do. That’s what the now endan- gered rules from the Federal Communications Commission aimed to do. “There’s kind of a void,” said Perkins Coie telecom attorney Marc Martin. If the just-passed measure also clears the House and is signed by President Donald Trump, no future FCC could pass the broadband privacy rules again without further change to U.S. law. The youth were gone before cops arrived. 1:29 p.m. - Hermiston police received a report of elder abuse. 4:27 p.m. - Police in Umatilla received a request to check on animals at a home on Washington Street. 4:29 p.m. - Oregon State Police responded to the crash of a Honda Accord on the westbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 187. Police found the driver, a 24-year-old man from Cheney, Washington, fell asleep. The car went off the road and stopped about 30 yards north of the freeway. The driver also suffered injuries and took an ambulance ride to a local hospital. 9:31 p.m. - A caller at Oxford Suites, 1050 N. First St., Hermiston, reported a man was fighting with his wife at the hotel. 9:44 p.m. - Law enforcement took a report of a fight at the Last Chance Tavern, Friday Morning PARENTS TALK BACK PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Umatilla tribal police arrested Colten Kee Nez, 27, of Pendleton, for domestic abuse and assault, both felonies. •Pendleton police arrested Marion Ivan Taylor III, 57, of 74960 Brace Road, Irrigon, for possession of methamphet- amine, possession of cocaine, felon in possession of a weapon (electric stun device and switchblade-type knife), carrying concealed weapons, and on a warrant for failure to appear. •Oregon State Police arrested Kayla Marie Doty, 29, of Washougal, Washington, for driving under the influence of intoxicants. State police reported a trooper at 5:26 p.m. stopped a pickup for speeding east on Interstate 84 near milepost in Morrow County, and Doty failed a sobriety test. The trooper took her to the Boardman Police Department, where she provided a breath sample showing her blood-alcohol level was .23 percent, just shy of three times the legal limit of .08 percent.
