Page 6A COMMUNITY East Oregonian Tuesday, December 20, 2016 HERMISTON Community warms up during Pancakes with Santa By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Despite frigid temperatures throughout the region, the Hermiston Conference Center sizzled with holiday cheer during Saturday’s Pancakes with Santa. Presented by Hermiston Parks & Recreation, the event, which pre-sold 150 tickets, is in its second year. Doug Barak, past president of the Hermiston Noon Kiwanis Club, said the service group is always looking for opportunities to serve kids in the community. More than a dozen Kiwanians took a break from selling Christmas trees outside the conference center to help with the family event. “It’s a fun event and creates some great memories,” Barak said. Karen and Russell Seaton agreed. The couple, who moved to Hermiston from Eugene this past summer, said it provided an opportunity to spend time with others in the community. Staff photo by Tammy Malgesini McKenna Seaton shows off an ornament she made while her friends Athena Huffman-Martin and Harmony Blake work on craft projects Saturday during Pancakes with Santa at the Hermiston Conference Center. Pancakes with Santa, Karen said, was designed to focus on kids and families. Reserved tables of eight were arranged around the room. Key Club members — a student-run service program sponsored by the Kiwanis — from Hermiston and Umatilla high schools offered coffee and orange juice, as well as cleared tables to make space for kids to enjoy craft activities. HHS Key Club president Kellie Zepeda and Vanessa Ambriz, vice president, said it was fun seeing people happy and having a good time. The event, Zepeda said, was all about spreading Christmas joy. Seaton liked the arrangement, which encouraged family together- ness. “I like having our own tables,” Karen said. “Then, you can also get up and mingle with other people.” The Seatons’ 6-year-old daughter, McKenna, was happy spending time with some of her West Park Elemen- tary School classmates. “Because school has been out, they’ve been needing their friend fix,” Karen said. McKenna, along with Athena Huffman-Martin and Harmony Blake, both 6, were busy creating crafts. The trio showed off their gingerbread men and reindeer ornaments. Besides making orna- ments and coloring holiday-themed pictures, the girls agreed they missed visiting with each other since snowy Tuesday Morning COMING EVENTS 12 PM PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX STATION 7 AM 7:30 8 AM 8:30 Good Day Spokane Good Day Oregon CBS This Morning (N) CBS This Morning (N) Today Show Tony Bennett (N) Today Show Tony Bennett (N) Good Morning America (N) Good Morning America (N) SplashB.
