Police did not find the suspects. 2:10 a.m. - A resident of Southgate Village Apartments, 1105 S. First St., Hermiston, called 9-1-1 to report someone parked in his parking spot. The dispatch center told him to talk to the apartment manager. 10:55 a.m. - Umatilla police received a complaint about transients hanging out in the conference room and lobby at Umatilla City Hall, 700 Sixth St. 11:50 a.m. - A 34-year-old semi driver who failed to use chains where the state required them slid off the westbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 222. He was not injured and was able to drive. That was among the many slide-offs, wrecks and roll-overs Oregon State Police and local agencies responded to during the weekend. No one, though, reported serious or life-threatening injuries. 12:59 p.m. - Another man’s identity prevented a Hermiston man from buying a gun. At least for a while. The local 27-year-old went to the Hermiston Bi-Mart to buy a gun until a background check reported he was in a mental heath institution in Alabama, which disqualified him from buying the gun. Oregon State Police responded, and a trooper found out the buyer and the Alabama resident shared the same spellings on his first, middle and last names and shared the same date of birth. Police concluded the person trying to buy the gun was not the person in a mental institution. 1:10 p.m. - A resident on Northeast 15ht Street, Hermiston, told law enforcement the neighbor’s pit bull dog killed 20 of his chickens. 2:17 p.m. - A caller said she was concerned for the safety of two children digging a hole in the snow pile in the parking lot across from Trinity Lutheran Church, 485 W. Locust Ave., Hermiston. 3:05 p.m. - Fire destroyed a Dodge pickup that was heading east on Interstate 84 near milepost 224. Oregon State Police reported the vehicle caught fire for an unknown reason and no one was injured. 4:22 p.m. - Umatilla police received a 9-1-1 report of a dog without food, water or shelter in the back yard of a home on Chinook Court, Umatilla. Reports of neglected pets were among the most common calls for service during the weekend. 5:27 p.m. - A woman reported the theft of her black 1997 Honda Prelude from Northwest 13th Street, Hermiston. 8:03 p.m. - A Pendleton caller complained about having a lousy taxi ride and asked to speak to police. She said the driver hit holes and she twice hit her head. SATURDAY 3:39 a.m. - Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on Locust Street, Stanfield. 10:13 a.m.- Staff at Eastern Oregon Detox Center, 4705 N.W. Pioneer Place, Pendleton, reported a woman who seemed intoxicated was there 45 minutes earlier and tried to leave with a client. She was in a red Mercedes M320 with Oregon Plates and called the center and, again, sounded intoxicated. She was gone by the time police arrived. 5:09 p.m. - A Hermiston-area man told law enforcement is wife left their home and threatened to harm and kill him. 5:36 p.m. - A Weston man said he argued with his mother over picking up cigarettes, she made threats and now he is worried about his animals at her home. 5:52 p.m. - A caller reported the bank card reader was “yanked out” at Bank of Eastern Oregon, Irrigon. 9:16 p.m. - Staff at the Hermiston Warming Station, 1075 S. Highway 395, reported the theft of the stations LG flip phone. SUNDAY 2:35 a.m. - Pendleton police responded to Mosa 138 S. Main St., Pendleton, for a drunk male and female using racial slurs and trying to start fights with others in the bar. 10:33 a.m. - A Pilot Rock man reported the theft of a .40-caliber handgun from his home on Southwest Fifth Street. 2:01 p.m. - Water spewed across the road from the side of the regional waste facility at Feedville Road and Highway 207, Hermiston. 9:12 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint about the man riding a lawn mower several times each day and night past a neighborhood on North Second Street, Athena. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Sunday •Pendleton police cited Isaac Vanpelt, no age or address provided, for driving under the influence of intoxicants. •Oregon State Police arrested Mark Sheldon Warner, 53, of Pilot Rock, for duii (alcohol). •Milton-Freewater police arrested Oscar Casteneda, 25, of 210 N.E. 14th Ave., Milton-Freewater, for disorderly conduct and possession of methamphetamine. Hermiston High School students honored for tech achievements East Oregonian Three Hermiston High School students are the local winners of the 2016 Congressional App Chal- lenge — a contest hosted by several congressional districts that encouraged students nationwide to create original apps. Senior Jordan Liebe, junior Marvin Hozi and sophomore Courtney Cash developed “Touch and Talk,” an app that will give students a new way to communicate their needs nonverbally. The students, with the help of computer science teacher Robert Theriault, developed the app to help the Hermiston School District special programs department provide its students with more forms of nonverbal communication. The app will allow students to communicate simple phrases, such as requesting a pencil, selecting numbered or lettered options or answering true/false questions. Users can select answers using a touch- screen, a mouse, a space bar or arrow keys, as well as an electrical conductor button known as a “Makey- Makey.” The program allows students to choose their “voice,” which corre- sponds with their gender. The students created a video demonstrating how the app works that can be found on YouTube. The students said in the future they hope to customize the app even more. Thousands of students learned to code over the past few months as part of a nationwide competition, to which more than 650 orig- inal apps were submitted. The Hermiston High School students, along with other students from around the U.S., have been invited to show their apps to members of Congress and the tech community at an event in Washington, D.C., in April 2017.
