Carden Ave. The cost is By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian A huge fan of the Oregon Shake- speare Festival in Ashland, Pendleton High School’s drama teacher took inspiration from a 2006 production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Although still utilizing the original Shakespeare language, Shannon O’Rourke said the play was set in the 1970s. “It was absolutely the greatest production I’ve ever seen of anything,” she said. That got O’Rourke’s head spinning — thinking about ways to incorporate fashions and her favorite music from the 1980s. Now, with the right mixture of aspiring thespians, she is ready to tackle the project with an ’80s version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The production will be staged $6 for adults and $4 for students with identification. O’Rourke believes The Bard, himself, would be excited about the ’80s idea — utilizing costuming and music that is familiar to Baby Boomers, GenXers and beyond. She thinks Shakespeare would be flattered if his spirit happened onto the scene. “He would immediately realize that his stories and characters are timeless and ultimately human, which is what makes them so endearing and relatable,” O’Rourke said. As far as the stage, O’Rourke said the audience may notice things are a bit sparse. Creating a set for the shared space in the auditorium has been a huge challenge for the director. However, O’Rourke said it fits with the tone of the production. “The play demands the audience really use their imagination, as you do in your dreams,” she said. “Some- times, keeping things as simple as — Shannon O’Rourke, PHS drama teacher possible in theatre is the best way to go for the best story to be told.” Working on the production, O’Ro- urke said, has been like a really fun puzzle. Pulling the pieces together include figuring out how to use music from the 1980s that will help a younger audience understand the plot, the characters and the language, she said. In addition, O’Rourke said the cast really makes the show. “These kids are some of the most fun people you will ever encounter, anywhere,” she said. “I have laughed so much — it’s insane.” For more information, contact O’Rourke at shannon.orourke@ pendleton.k12.or.us.
