WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday called for the Pentagon to immediately suspend efforts to recover enlistment bonuses paid to thousands of soldiers in Cali- fornia, even as the Pentagon said late Tuesday the number of soldiers affected was smaller than first believed. “When those Californians answered the call to duty” to serve in Iraq and Afghani- stan, “they earned more from us than bureaucratic bungling and false promises,” Ryan said. He urged the Pentagon to suspend collection efforts until “Congress has time ... to protect service members from lifelong liability for DOD’s mistakes.” Ryan’s comments came as the White House said President Barack Obama has warned the Defense Department not to “nickel and dime” service members who were victims of fraud by overzealous recruiters. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday he did not believe Obama would support a blanket waiver of repayments, but said California National Guard members should not be held responsible for “unethical conduct or fraud perpetrated by someone else.” Defense Secretary Ash Carter, meanwhile, promised to resolve a festering conflict that has lingered for a decade. The Los Angeles Times reported over the weekend that the Pentagon has demanded that some soldiers repay their enlistment bonuses after audits revealed overpayments by the California National Guard. Recruiters under pressure to fill ranks and hit enlistment goals at the height of the two wars improperly offered bonuses of $15,000 or more to soldiers who re-enlisted. How I know the Bible is God’s Word The more I read the Bible, the more astonished I am at what an incredible book it is. It has been published in more editions, translated into more languages, and distributed in more copies than any other book. I am convinced the Bible was written by God because in the Old Testament alone He says so 2,600 times. We know the Bible is from God because it makes 2,500 prophecies, 2,000 of which have already been fulfilled. There are 333 prophecies about Jesus Christ, including the place of His birth, His character, His crucifixion. We can believe the Bible is from God because it is unified in thought. It contains 66 different books by about 40 different authors writing in three different languages-Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Yet the same golden thread of redemption runs through it-God by His grace saves us when we believe in Jesus Christ His Son. The Bible is from God because He has preserved it from destruction. It has survived 2,600 years of attack. It has survived philosophical debates,wars, persecutions, and burnings. The Bible is from God “All Scripture is inspired because it has been by God and is profitable confirmed by archeology. for teaching, for reproof, For example, the Hittites for correction, and for were mentioned some 40 instruction in times in Genesis and other righteousness” parts of the Old Testament, - 2 Timothy 3:16 but secular literature made no mention of them at all, so some people said the Bible was wrong. Then archeologists dug up the great Hittite empire and proved the Bible right. The Bible is from God because it has the power to transform. It transforms individual lives, societies, and It has produced literacy, liberty, and a republican form of government. Is the bible precious to you? Do you read it everyday? When a Harney County deputy responded to a 911 call after the shooting, O’Dea suggested the shooting had been self-inflicted, according to sheriff’s reports. A deputy who interviewed O’Dea at the scene wrote in a report that he smelled of alcohol. O’Dea denied being intoxicated, and his attorney, Derek Ashton, reiterated that contention. O’Dea also didn’t identify himself as Portland’s police chief when deputies spoke with him. A few days later O’Dea told the Portland mayor that he had fired the shot. Larry O’Dea, 54, has been indicted in Harney County on a charge of negligently wounding another, The Oregonian reported. The indictment states he “unlawfully and by failing to use ordinary care under the circumstances” shot his friend. O’Dea resigned as Port- land police chief in June, ending a nearly 30-year career amid criminal and internal investigations into whether he was forthright after the shooting during an April camping trip in eastern Oregon. O’Dea had been chief for little more than a year when he went on the trip. He shot his friend, Robert Dempsey, “This is not out of the norm. Commercial motor vehicle operation and the requirements that go along with that are complex and extensive,” said Cullen Sisskind, manager of the CHP’s motor carrier safety program. USA Holiday had past problems but then appears to have self-corrected “and has had a very good record” over the past few years, Sisskind said. From 2005 through 2008, the company received a cluster of unsatisfactory ratings for maintenance, equipment and issues involving a driver. In 2011, Vides was pulled over for going more than 80 mph in a 70 mph zone a few miles from the site where the crash occurred Sunday. The California Highway NIGHT OWL STATION PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX LOS ANGELES — The treads on half the tires of a tour bus that slammed into a tractor-trailer on a desert freeway, killing 13 people, were worn down to an unsafe level, a federal investigator said Tuesday as authorities worked to determine the cause of one of California’s deadliest highway crashes. The condition of the four faulty tires meant the 1996 bus was out of compliance with federal standards and could have been taken out of service, Earl Weener, a board member of the National Transportation Safety Board, said at a news conference in Palm Desert, near the site of Sunday’s crash that also injured 31 people on Interstate 10. bus was traveling at freeway speed, officials said. Vides was among those killed in the crash. Records kept by the CHP show that USA Holiday had been deemed unsatisfactory on several levels in the past, though it had not received that rating since 2010, when an unnamed company driver received an “unsatisfactory” rating overall and in relation to “controlled substance and alcohol testing results,” the records show. An unsatisfactory rating could be a paperwork issue or a genuine safety concern, and because the CHP only retains records for four years, none of the original reports from 2010 and before on USA Holiday still exist, the agency said.
