BRIEFLY HSD offers student dental health screenings HERMISTON — Students in the Hermiston School District will be given dental health screenings over the course of the next month. Advantage Dental has been contracted to provide the service through the Oregon Community Foundation. Students with parent permission can receive an oral health screening, luoride coatings, sealants and silver luoride. The program is an effort to help meet the requirements set forth by Oregon House Bill 2972 to collect dental screening information for students under the age of 8 who are starting an educational program for the irst time. New students are required to have certiication of a dental health screening from a qualiied provider in the past 12 months. Guardian Angel Homes offers fall fun HERMISTON — A kids’ costume contest, food and fun are planned during the Fall Festival at Guardian Angel Homes. The public is invited to attend the free event, which features two “freaky” rooms, candy and treats, spooky picture cutouts, pumpkin decorating, face painting, cupcake decorating, a bouncy house, ishing pond game and a haunted graveyard. The event is Friday from 5:30-7 p.m. at the assisted living facility at 540 N.W. 12th St., Hermiston. Food offerings include chili or hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, cider and witch’s brew, and desserts. A cappella group to perform beneit concert HERMISTON — An a cappella quartet formed nearly two decades ago at Blue Mountain Community College is reuniting for a beneit concert. Absolutely Nobody, featuring Rick Pullen, Cory Cooley, Tom Phelan and Joe Lindsay, will perform Friday at 7 p.m. at New Hope Community Church, 1350 S. Highway 395, Hermiston. The suggest donation is $10. The quartet, which hooked up again nearly two years ago, performed a beneit concert for Jeremy Miller, one of its members. The 1997 Pendleton High School graduate died from pancreatic cancer in February 2015. Since Miller’s death, the group performed at a class reunion. Once again, the members will harmonize for one of their own during the fundraising event — Cooley and his wife, Stacy, are adopting two children from Ethiopia. Cora Emma (Deusen) Linder New Plymouth, Idaho January 26, 1917-October 16, 2016 Cora Emma (Deusen) Linder, age 99, of New Plymouth passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016. Emma was born to Paul Frederick Deusen and Cora Marie (Ehfe) Deusen on Jan. 26, 1917, at home near New Plymouth, Idaho. She attended Sunnyside School for two years, transferring to New Plymouth where she graduated in 1936. She married Wheeler Calvin Linder on Dec. 24, 1938. They lived in New Plymouth until 1941 when they moved to Hermiston, Ore. Wheeler passed away in 1957. Emma worked at the Army Depot Ordnance from 1959 to 1973. She then moved to Boise and worked Linder at the Veterans Hospital until she retired in 1979. Emma enjoyed all kinds of handiwork, especially embroidery and crocheting. She made many afghans and kitchen towels for family and friends. She also liked working in her yards. In 2004, she moved to New Plymouth where she resided until moving in 2016 to an assisted living facility in Fruitland. Emma was a member of American Legion Auxiliary of Herm- iston, Ore., since 1946, the New Plymouth Senior Citi- zens, and the Priscilla Club. Emma is survived three sons, Paul Charles (Hyeja) of Portland, Ore., William Gary (Judy) of Hermiston, Ore., and John Calvin (Deborrah) of Wallowa, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Debbie (Victor) Baros, Robert (Kim) Linder, Lisa (Scott) Fluckinger, Kim (John) Furgerson, Kristin (Sam) Connell, Emily (Wes) Nash, Charles J. (Katie) Linder, and Genevieve (Chris) Methvin; 20 great-grand- children and 10 great-great-grand- children, as well as two sisters, Mary A. Ziegler and Helen White, both of New Plymouth. Preceding her in death is her husband, Wheeler, in 1957; her parents, Paul and Cora Deusen; two brothers-in-law, Guss Ziegler and Floyd White; daughter-in-law Jennifer Linder; and great-great- grandson Carrson Wade Furgerson. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at Plymouth Congregational Church in New Plymouth. Interment will be at Herm- iston, Ore., cemetery on Friday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. (PST). PUBLIC SAFETY LOG MONDAY 2:14 a.m. - A white Chevy car with a female driver stopped in the middle of the road in the wrong lane at the intersection of East Highland Avenue and South Highway 395, Hermiston, and was waiting for a “nonexistent light to change.” The person who reported the incident believed the woman was intoxicated, but police couldn’t ind the vehicle. 6:53 a.m. - The driver of a semi backed his big rig into a fence at Keystone RV Inc., 4635 N.W. McKennon Road, Pendleton, which caused signiicant damage to the fence. The driver, though, refused to provide a Keystone employee with insurance information, which prompted the company to call police. 8:10 a.m. - Pendleton police responded to the Rainbow Cafe, 209 S. Main St., on a 9-1-1 call about an assault. 9:20 a.m. - Johnson Creek overlowed into houses in Umapine. One caller reported the creek looded his grand- mother’s basement on the 51700 block of Highway 332. 11:47 a.m. - A woman with a broken foot told police she fended off a would-be thief in the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot in Hermiston, 1350 N. First St. She kicked the person, but it happened so fast she didn’t remember if it was a man or woman. The incident took place an hour before she called police. 12:15 p.m. - A large black yearling bull ran loose at Bensel Road and Cooney Lane, Hermiston, prompting a call to 9-1-1. The caller reported the bull’s owner told him not to put his hands on the animal. 1:54 p.m. - A woman reported someone stole her purse out of her shopping cart at Fiesta Foods, 1875 N. First St., Hermiston, and she wanted police to respond and look at footage from the store. 1:58 p.m. - Staff with the Umatilla County Developmental Disabilities Program reported “discrepancies in the inance ledgers for some clients” at the facility at 1035 S.W. Marshall Ave., Pendleton. 3:15 p.m. - The Walla Walla Nursery Company, 4716 Stateline Road, Milton- Freewater, reported the theft of a white 1991 Jeep Cherokee. 3:51 p.m. - A caller told the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice he was at Ferndale Road and Highway 11, Milton-Freewater, and found a backpack containing an empty bag of marijuana, rolling papers, clothing, and a machete. The caller said he left the backpack where he found it. 4:51 p.m. - Police made contact with a woman on East Cherry Avenue, Hermiston, who said she knew who bit the inger off a woman at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston. She didn’t want police to come to her house, but she was willing to talk on the phone. 4:29 p.m. - A Pendleton man reported a youth got off a bus on Southeast Goodwin Avenue at 3 p.m. and hit his decorations. He said he told them to stop and they came back 30 minutes later, jumped over his Chevrolet Camaro and left footprints on his car. 7:34 p.m. - A son calling for his mother in Pilot Rock reported a Makarov .380- caliber semi-auto handgun was missing from her home, but no one knew for how long. 8:41 p.m. - Someone stole a go-kart with a Predator motor and four large shocks from East Bruce Street, Weston. 10:44 p.m. - Staff at the Red Lion Hotel, 304 S.E. Nye Ave., Pendleton, reported a drunk guest was yelling and causing a disturbance. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Pendleton police arrested Aurora Martinez-Lupercio, 55, of Yakima, and Claudia Roci Camacho, 34, no address provided, for possession of methamphetamine. •Milton-Freewater police arrested Eric Ross Saunders, 30, of 636 S. Columbia St., Milton-Freewater, for third-degree assault. •Hermiston police arrested Cindy Lee Fisher, 28, of 810 E. Coe St., Stanield, for possession of methamphetamine, possession of Hydrocodone, giving false information to police, second-degree trespass and contempt of court. •Pendleton police arrested Joseph Lester Wilcox, 46, of Pendleton, for fourth-degree assault constituting domestic violence after he struck a woman in the face. Michael Wayne Knifong, Beaverton, Ore., formerly of Enterprise, Ore., passed away October 11, 2016, on Tiger Canyon Road near Milton-Freewater, Ore., at the age of 50. Michael Wayne Knifong was born September 14, 1966, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Ernie and Linda Knifong. He is the older of two sons. Mike was raised in Wallowa County. He grew up with a love of hunting, ishing, and the outdoors. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1985. During his time as a “Savage” foot- ball player his team won the state championship in Autzen Stadium in 1985. He went to BMCC after graduation and while in Pendleton he met his wife, Michelle. They were married in 1988 and later Mike graduated as an electrical technician. They resided in Pendleton for ive years. After Pendleton Mike and Michelle moved to Beaverton, where he took with job with Textronix. There they started a family and had two daughters, Emily (18) and Erika (15). Mike was employed with Textronix for 18 years and later retired from there. Mike was an avid water fowler, and a board member for the Water Fowl Festival. He enjoyed this immensely and made many good friends through this organization. The family had many memorable camping trips to the Snake River, Wyoming, Yellowstone, and Lake Takenitch in Florence. Many of these trips were joined by Mike’s aunt Jenice and uncle Larry. Mike spent 15 years hunting the Snake River Canyon with his great uncle Don, father Ernie, and younger brother Ken. Mike was known for being a passionate outdoorsman and storyteller. He always had an upbeat attitude and was willing to give of his time to help anyone. Mike is survived by his wife Michelle (Beaverton); daughters Emily and Erika (Beaverton); father Ernie (Vikki) of Wallowa; mother Linda of Enterprise; brother Ken (Colby) of Enterprise; nephews Kennisen and Kellan of Enterprise; aunt Jenice and uncle Larry Gibson of Oregon City; and numerous other great-aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at the Enterprise Baptist Church in Enterprise, Oregon.
