Baker, 91, a Pendleton resident, died Sunday, September 25, 2016, at a Walla Walla care facility. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrange- ments. Joseph was born April 13, 1925, in Hewitt, Minnesota, to Joseph A. and Baker Esther E. (Chase) Baker. He attended Honeyford Grade School and Gilby High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September of 1944 and served in WWII and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in September of 1951. On September 4, 1948, he married Norma Jean Lane in Longview, Washington. They made their home in Kelso, Washington, for 30 years. Joe worked in Longview, Washington, as an appliance service manager. The couple came to Pendleton in 1981. In March of 1982, Joe began work at St. Anthony Hospital as the main- tenance supervisor. He retired from St. Anthony in 1990. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church. Joe enjoyed ishing, hunting and photography. He is survived by his son David Baker and wife Kimberly of Tumwater, Washington, and two grand- children. He was preceded in death by his wife Norma, his parents and a sister. Barbara C. Biamont Oregon City February 11, 1927-October 1, 2016 Barbara C. Biamont was born in La Grande, Oregon, on February 11, 1927, to Claude E Cooper and Marguerite (Winters) Cooper. Barbara also had an older brother, Robert E Cooper. The Cooper family moved to Sherman Oaks, California, and stayed there through Barbara’s high school years. After high school Barbara completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where she pursued her dream of nursing. She completed Biamont her training at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, Oregon, where she met her future husband, Raymond Biamont. Ray and Barbara were married January 1, 1948. They were blessed with six children, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Barbara’s irst love was her husband, Ray. Their marriage was framed around the love of God, which they shared with their children. She had a great love for people; she helped so many and always seemed to see the best in people. Her ability to forgive lowed from her love of Christ Jesus, and her humility was seen in her being able to always put others ahead of herself. A nurse, a supervisor of nursing and a director of nursing, Barbara exempliied what a nurse can be, not only in her love for her work, but also in loving compassion for others. Barbara would regenerate by retreating to Wallowa Lake to the cabin built by her grandfather. With family and friends she enjoyed new adventures and drives in the mountains. Her love of nature was always evident. She loved animals, and was always excited to see them in the woods of Wallowa County. Wallowa Lake was the central gathering spot for many family reunions, where she loved to see and reacquaint with her large extended family, friends, co-workers, and the always welcomed stranger. Surviving Barbara are her daughters Mary Long, Corinne Biamont and Eleanor Renoe, and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Ray, children Nikki Biamont, Robert Biamont and Ken Biamont, and brother Lt. Col. Robert Cooper. A memorial service for Barbara will be held at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton, Oregon, on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com. In John Day, Chet was constantly involved in his church and community and especially his sons’ activities as Little League baseball coach, Boy Scout leader, swim team and Grant Union booster clubs, and advisor to DeMolay and Rainbow chapters. An avid deer and elk hunter, Chet looked forward to fall hunting seasons each year and some of his favorite times were days in the woods with his sons and hunting partners. Chet was recently recognized as a 50-year member of John Day Elks Lodge #1824, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler. He also served as district deputy for Southeast District of the Oregon State Elks Association. Chet was particularly involved in Elks ritual competitions as a team coach and judge. In 2001, Chet was named to the OSEA Hall of Fame for his many years of service. Chet was also a Past Master of Canyon City Lodge No. 34, A.F. & A.M. and a 32° member of Baker Valley Scottish Rite. Chet served on the board of directors of Old West Federal Credit Union for 35 years, beginning with the Grant County Credit Union and continuing on the board through the series of mergers that created Old West. In 2006, Chet married Kay Bums of Hermiston and they enjoyed 10 years of world travel, adventures, and loving togetherness. They volunteered several years for the Columbia River Cowboy Gathering & Music Festival and attended other music and arts events throughout the region. Chet is survived by his wife Kay; son Jon (Laura) of Grants Pass, Ore.; son Don (Anne) of Puyaliup, Wash.; granddaughters Rita (Daniel) Bennett Adams of Eatonville, Wash., and Caria Bennett of Bronx- ville, N.Y.; stepdaughter Heather (Nick) Powers and their children Elizabeth and Connor of Newburg, Ore.; and brothers Bill (Martha) of Wilsonville, Ore., and Ben (Edna) of Raleigh, N.C. Her garage was always full of decorations just waiting to be put up for every single one, espe- cially Christmas. She liked going out with her friends and family, spending time with them and just enjoying their company. At home she and her daughter were constantly in the kitchen, baking and cooking and trying new recipes. She enjoyed relaxing around the house, watching her favorite TV shows and listening to country music. She had several dogs and cats over the years and loved each and every one of them as if they were her own babies. She was preceded in death by her father Warren Shepherd, mother Dolores Shepherd, and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her two children, Travis and Tonya Lambert, both of Athena, Ore., and by her two sisters, Gloria Skeman (Richard) of Pendleton, Ore., and Ann Stanley of Hermiston, Ore. She is also survived by her nieces Lisa Hotchkiss (Wayne) and Tylene Hill, and nephews Shawn Simonsen (Carrie) and Jake Stanley (Ashlie). She grew up in Milton-Freewater, Ore., for a short time then moved to Athena, Oregon. She graduated from McEwen High School in Athena, Oregon. She had two chil- dren. Faye lived and worked around the Athena/Pend- leton area her whole life. In her younger years she kept many foster children and cared for them deeply, keeping touch with most for the rest of her life. She then went on to work at the Oregon State Hospital and Wildhorse Casino for several years each, making lifelong friends at both. Chester Allyn “Chet” Bennett Jr., 84, of Herm- iston, Oregon, died of heart failure on September 26, 2016, while vacationing in Pine Top, Arizona. Chet’s warm and generous spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him and whose lives were touched by him. Born January 6, 1932, in Corvallis, Oregon, Chet was the oldest of three sons of Chester A. Bennett Sr. and Ruby Hinds. His mother died while Bennett Chet was a young boy, but his father later married Ruby Farlow and the family was joined by another brother, Robert. As a Forest Service family, Chet spent his childhood years in Paisley, BIy, John Day and Enterprise, where he graduated from high school in 1949. The raucous exploits of four boys growing up under one roof include legendary tales involving a baby porcupine loose in the house and a brush ire the boys started that was quite embarrassing to their forest supervisor dad. Chet attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army at the outset of the Korean War in 1950. Chet served in a combat engineer battalion during the war and at Ft. Carson, Colo- rado, after returning home. He resumed his education at Oregon State College using his Gl Bill beneits, while continuing to serve in the Army Reserve where he attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Chet married the former Joan Finlayson of Eugene in 1956, while both were still in college. Their son Donald Allyn was born the next year in Corvallis, and son Jon Robert born in Eugene in 1961. Chet and Joan were married 47 years until her death in 2003. Chet graduated from the School of Forestry at Oregon State with his baccalaureate degree in 1958 and began his professional career with the U.S. Forest Service after spending summers during college on trail building and ireighting crews. First assigned to the Willamette National Forest in Oakridge, Chet moved his young family to John Day in 1962 where he worked in various positions on the Malheur National Forest until his retirement in 1988. During his long career, Chet was a leader of local and state chapters of the National Federation of Federal Employees.
