PORTLAND (AP) — Searchers say a Texas ireighter who went missing after splitting off from his friends during a hike in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland has been found and is doing ine. Capt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Ofice identiied the hiker as 26-year-old Devin Paez, an Austin ireighter who had been hiking at the popular tourist destination with three friends Thursday, two of whom were fellow Austin ireighters. He was located on a trail below Triple Falls by a hiker who recognized him from photos he saw on media reports, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Ofice. Oficials say a thankful Paez was transported to a command post where he was medically evaluated and reunited with his friends. Aside from dehy- dration and some scratches, Paez was OK and refused further medical treatment, authorities said. Alexander said Paez had been “struggling a little bit” when the hikers reached Sherrard Point on Thursday. He decided to leave his backpack behind, perhaps to reduce weight, and go ahead of the group late Thursday afternoon. A friend tried to catch up with Paez, but couldn’t ind him. The group waited at the Wahkeena Falls trailhead and called police when Paez didn’t show after nightfall. Rescue teams searched roughly 20 miles of trails overnight, but they didn’t have a great location on him in an area with many trail systems. SENTENCES PENDLETON — The following felony sentences have been 12:46 a.m. - A caller reported gunshots and yelling in the area of Viewcrest Apartments, 525 S.W. 13th Place, Hermiston. Police did not ind any suspects. 7:16 a.m. - An employee with the U.S. Forest Service reported someone on Wednesday took a tool from a work vehicle near Harris Park, Milton-Freewater, and “pounded all over the side of the pickup, lattened tires, and dumped oil all over.” 9:30 a.m. - A Weston woman on Wildwood Loop reported she is moving and a man “torn up” her fence while she was away. She also said someone used a knife to punch holes into the liner of her waterfall. 9:41 a.m. - A caller on North O’Brien St., Stanield, said a 30-year-old man was riding a bicycle fast while carrying a rile in a case. 10:22 a.m. - Hermiston police received another call about gunshots, this time a caller on East Opal Court said she heard two shots “like a high powered gun” from west of her back yard, 11:39 a.m. - An Ione mother reported a juvenile shot her daughter with a pellet- type gun. She said she took the gun, her daughter was OK, but she wanted to talk to someone about it. A Morrow County sheriff’s deputy responded and spoke to the juvenile. 12:18 p.m. - Law enforcement responded to a call from a father at Trail Apartments, 295 Boardman Ave. N.E., He said he didn’t know if anyone else witnessed the fall. “I’m sure there were other people on the trail, but I just don’t know how many people were around,” Alexander said. Thousands of people hike at the Gorge each year, and it’s not that unusual for someone to get lost. Two other hikers, both from out of town, called the sheriff’s ofice Friday to report that they were lost, and rocks were sliding out from under them as they tried to move. A deputy instructed the pair to stay put and wait for rescuers. It’s important to research your route before going on a hike, Alexander said. “The trails themselves, some are well-maintained and others are side ones that are either no longer main- tained or have been closed,” Alexander said. “You can get easily turned around.” Owen Kerry Hegdal, 25, and Jennifer Sue Hegdal, 34, both of Weston. The mother of the 3-year-old said there was no need for medics, but the hitter’s mother left with him and her other children and she has a description of the vehicle. 1:37 p.m. - Five black Angus bulls went missing from property on Sunquist Road, Milton-Freewater. 2:21 p.m. - A man on Lind Road, Umatilla, told law enforcement a woman came to his house and wanted to sell him some tools. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •A Milton-Freewater police chase ended with the capture of a wanted man. Milton-Freewater Police Chief Doug Boedigheimer reported an oficer learned Richard Streck III, 40, of College Place, was driving a gray 2002 Chevrolet Suburban with Washington plates. Streck, though, had a misdemeanor warrant in Umatilla County and a felony warrant from the Washington Department of Corrections. The oficer saw the Suburban on Thursday afternoon near South Mill Street and Southeast Eighth Avenue. Streck was driving, saw the oficer and “began eluding by driving recklessly on South Mill Street southbound.” The oficer pursued. Streck turned eastbound on Southeast Ninth Avenue. By then, several Milton-Freewater oficers were in pursuit. Streck headed east out of town. Chase speeds did not exceed 65 mph, according to Boedigheimer. Oficers pursued Streck into a stubble wheat ield off of Powerline Road, where he stopped and tried to run. “He ultimately gave up, obeyed commands, and was taken into custody without harm or incident,” the chief reported. Police booked Streck into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton, on the warrants and for reckless driving and misdemeanor and felony counts of attempt to elude. •Boardman police arrested Mario Junior Morales, 33, of 333 Marshal Loop, Boardman, for unauthorized use of a vehicle. •Pendleton police arrested Alejandro Gonzales, 40, of Hermiston, for felony attempt to elude and a parole violation. Paez told authorities Friday he got lost when he took a wrong turn following what he thought was a trail and then stumbled down a steep embankment. He couldn’t get back so he stayed where he was until morning when he made his way back up, drank water from a creek and continued following trails. That’s when a hiker saw him and contacted authorities. Meanwhile, a different hiker died Friday morning after falling from a trail a few miles west of Wahkeena Falls. The man in this 30s was hiking with another person at Angel’s Rest when he fell from a 40-foot cliff near a small waterfall. He was already dead when a rope-rescue team reached him. Alexander said the death appears to be accidental, but the detectives and a medical examiner will investigate.
