May 4, 1959-Aug. 24, 2016 Betty Jean Briley, former Stanield-Herm- iston resident, was born on June 6, 1927, in Bend, Oregon, to parents Charles and Anna McQuinn McMahon. She died on August 22, 2016, in Wood- burn, Oregon, at the age of 89 years. She was raised and attended schools in Portland, Oregon. Betty was united in marriage to David D. Briley on July 27, 1947, in Vancouver, Wash- ington. They lived in Clackamas County, Oregon, for many years where Betty Briley stayed at home to raise their eight children. They moved to Stanield, Oregon, in 1989 and then to Woodburn, Oregon, in 2015. Betty enjoyed gardening, growing lowers, crossword puzzles, reading, camping, spending time at the beach, and going to the cabin in Sumpter. She is survived by her children Chester Wyatt, Elgin, Ore., Rebecca Stearns (Jim), Hermiston, Ore., Stephen Briley, Hermiston, Ore., John Briley, Eagle Creek, Ore., Mark Briley (Teri), Woodburn, Ore., and Barbara Emra (Keith), Donald, Ore.; 15 grandchil- dren; 24 great-grandchil- dren; two great-great-grand- children; and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband David Briley in August 2015; her parents; two sons, David Wayne Briley and Richard “Rick” Briley; six sisters, Hazel, Gladys, Bernice, Ethel, Dorothy and Blanche; and two brothers, Walter and Alvis. A celebration of life service for Betty and David will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Herm- iston, Oregon. Burial, with military honors for David, will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Stanield, Oregon. (541-276-8100). Lifelong Heppner resi- dent Howard Bryant, 98, died Thursday, August 25, 2016, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Heppner United Methodist Church. A private family committal service will be held at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Howard was born near Heppner to Madge and Glenn Bryant. He joined his older brother Earle Bryant at their home on Bruce Kelly’s ranch on Willow Creek. Bryant This is where he spent his childhood. Howard was an outstanding athlete in high school. He went on to become a big supporter of local athletics, through his attendance at nearly every sporting event and through his generous donations to the programs. He has cheered on generations of Mustangs. It is theorized that he may have attended more high school sports activities than any other one in the history of the school. Howard was also a cowboy, with friends, stories and the Morrow County Champion Calf Roping saddle to prove it. He shared his love of horses with many through his volunteer efforts for the Wranglers as a founding member in 1946, the open horse show and the Morrow County Fair and Rodeo, contributing time, knowledge and money to these events. Howard was an avid outdoorsman. He was one of the group of men that developed Penland Lake in Morrow County. He and his friends have shared their cabin in the mountains with many local and out-of-town guests. A lot of young and old friends hunted for their irst deer or elk from this cabin near Penland Lake and many also have attended the famous annual clam feed. He happily shared his valuable expertise with his friends, and then with their sons and the sons of these sons. He was a lifelong member of the Masons and the Shriners. He is also a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. He been an active proponent of these groups in many different avenues as a leader, a supporter and as an advisor. He was a local businessman. He began as a banker, and was one of the founding members of the Bank of Eastern Oregon, and also its irst board chair. Howard was a Main Street business owner, a well-loved and trusted insurance agent for decades. He served as a mentor to the many that followed in his banking and insurance footsteps. He was our local historian: the man we turned to when we did not recognize someone in a picture, the person that we sought when we needed to clarify the name of an old business in town or where a canyon may be located. His memories were a treasure to all of us. Perhaps this may be missed most of all. His generosity was a bonus. Howard was recognized for his dedication and generosity to his commu- nity when he was named Heppner Man of the Year in 2014. He was also a husband and loving partner to Beth for nearly 75 years. They were best of friends. She predeceased him in January 31, 2009. Howard was a loved family man to his many nieces and nephews. He will be missed.
