RECORDS Saturday, July 16, 2016 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG THURSDAY 8:11 a.m. - A resident of Hat Rock Road, Hermiston, reported a woman came into his house while he was taking a shower and took his tablet computer and $40 cash. He requested contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy. 8:37 a.m. - Someone tried to steal a “kick bag” from a home on Southwest Court Avenue, Pendleton. The caller said the thief managed to wrestle it into the front yard and then just spilled the sand from it all over. She requested phone contact from a Pendleton police oficer. 9:18 a.m. - Vandalism was reported from the West Hills Elementary School construction site in Pendleton. A locked gate and fence were torn down. An employee with Kirby Nagelhout Construction requested oficer contact. 9:57 a.m. - A person driving westbound on Interstate 84 near Boardman reported a man lying on the ground alongside the freeway with a piece of cardboard over his body. The caller requested a welfare check. Oregon State Police investigated. 10:03 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice were called when a person reported a Walmart bag in a ditch along the west side of the bridge on East Loop and South Edwards roads had some kind of hair sticking out of it. The caller wasn’t sure whether the hair was animal or human. 10:24 a.m. - The manager of Mountain Glen Apartments, 200 N.E. Pioneer Drive, Heppner, reported her ofice was broken into and believes juveniles were the culprits. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice took a report. 1:32 p.m. - Marv’s Glass Shop, 401 N. Main St., Milton- Freewater, reported the theft of soda from a vending machine. 1:33 p.m. - A Walmart employee called Pendleton police after people reported a man and a woman asking store patrons for money. One person reported the man told her “he was going to join ISIS if she did not give him a dollar.” The employee requested that Pendleton police trespass the couple. 4:36 p.m. - Pendleton police broke up a ight at the 8th Street Bridge. 5:24 p.m. - A woman reported she was punched the face by an “ex” when she took her truck back from him. She requested a Pendleton police oficer meet her at the Pendleton Woolen Mills parking lot, 1307 S.E. Court Place. 5:35 p.m. - A man purportedly selling Direct TV cable service was reported to Pendleton police as suspicious after he knocked on doors in the vicinity of Northwest Fourth Street and Ingram Lane. The man was found and given a warning by police after another resident called police after he knocked on doors on Northwest Fifth Street at 8:44 p.m. But the man again was reportedly soliciting business on Northwest Eighth Street at 9:25 p.m. 7:42 p.m. - A four-year-old child wandering alone near the Don Baxter Skate Park, 8 N. Main Ave., Irrigon, was returned to his home by a Morrow County sheriff’s deputy. 7:50 p.m. - The Walla Walla Sheriff’s Ofice requested contact from the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice after two people involved in a car accident near Stateline Road and Highway 332 in Washington reported leeing from an assault in Umatilla County. 8:09 p.m. - A car was reported stolen from the vicinity of Southeast Byers Avenue and Eighth Street, Pendleton. 8:17 p.m. - A resident of Southwest Birch Street, Pilot Rock, reported a man was walking through the neighborhood looking at houses, and knocked on her door to try to sell her satellite TV service. When she asked the man for a business card, he said he didn’t have any and walked away. She requested a police oficer talk to the man. 8:45 p.m. - A resident of Southeast Byers Avenue, Pendleton, returned home after being gone a few days to ind her front door kicked in and clothing, ID and other items missing. The caller said she let a friend stay while she was gone and he reported a woman was there and was asked to leave during that time. She requested contact from a Pendleton police oficer. 8:59 p.m. - Prescription medication was reported stolen from a home on South Townsend Road, Hermiston. The caller named a possible suspect. 10:06 p.m. Pendleton police ielded two calls for men illegally lodging in southwest Pendleton. One man, wearing only boxer briefs, was sleeping behind the former Albertson’s grocery store, 1300 S.W. Court Ave. And eight minutes later someone reported a man lying on the sidewalk, half in the gravel, near Oxford Suites, 2400 S.W. Court Place. 10:57 p.m. - A resident of Southwest 37th Street, Pendleton, reported hearing two explosions but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary when she looked outside. 11:02 p.m. - A resident of North High Street, Adams, reported several shots ired over the past hour and a half, possibly from the vicinity of Highway 11. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Mariah Shaunika Ray Wright, 24, address not provided, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and second-degree disorderly conduct. •Donald Kenneth Cundiff Jr., 21, address not provided, was arrested by Hermiston police on charges of irst-degree unlawful sexual penetration (two counts) and irst-degree sexual abuse. East Oregonian Page 7A BRIEFLY Woman leads oficers on 120 mph motorcycle chase Man arrested after car chase previously listed on county’s most wanted A 39-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after leading oficers on a motorcycle chase on Interstate 84 in Morrow and Gilliam counties that reached speeds in excess of 120 mph. Shannon Marie Scholl, of Vancouver, Washington, also tried to lee on foot after running out of gas on the freeway. She was charged Friday in Gilliam County Circuit Court with two counts of attempting to elude a police oficer, Scholl reckless driving and possession of methamphetamine. The pursuit began in Morrow County, where a deputy clocked Scholl driving 92 mph on I-84 westbound at milepost 154. The oficer attempted to pull her over, but she sped away. Gilliam County Sheriff Gary Betten- court said Scholl pulled into Arlington to get gas when she encountered another deputy, and sped back onto the highway heading east. Bettencourt said they clocked Scholl at speeds up to 120 mph. Scholl ran out of gas at milepost 146, hopped the guardrail and attempted to run toward the Columbia River. Bettencourt said Scholl fell down a steep embankment and was quickly arrested. Nobody was seriously injured in the chase. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice has also cited Scholl with speeding, driving while suspended and driving without insurance. She remains in custody at the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility in The Dalles on $1,000 bail. PENDLETON — The man arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through Pendleton Wednesday is no stranger to eluding the law. Prior to Wednesday’s events, Jason Michael Garza, 26, of Hermiston was listed on the Umatilla County Sheriff’s ofice most wanted list in March 2016. Arrest warrants were issued for failure to appear Garza on charges of giving false information to police and a felon in possession of a restricted weapon. Garza’s rap sheet stretches back to 2012 when he was irst cited for possession of methamphetamine and then a failure to appear for that charge. Since then, Garza has regularly faced drug, weapons and failure to appear charges. On July 13, Oregon State Police trooper Mitchel Pace attempted to stop Garza south of Pendleton at around milepost four along Highway 395 for failure to maintain lane. Garza led in a Mitsubishi Eclipse, reaching speeds in excess of 80 mph as he sped through Pendleton. The chase lasted about seven minutes before Garza stopped and was arrested at 11 p.m. without incident at Circle K, 335 S.E. Court Ave. Two Pendleton Police Department patrols assisted in the arrest. Garza has been charged with felony attempt to elude and reckless driving. He also faces charges on outstanding warrants for failure to appear and parole violations. Bail is set at $15,000. Hermiston man arrested on sex abuse charges Police ID suspect in Oregon Coast bomb scare HERMISTON — A Hermiston man was arrested Thursday and charged with three felonies. 21-year-old Donald Kenneth Cundiff Jr. faces two counts of unlawful sexual penetration in the irst degree, a class A felony, and one count of sexual abuse in the irst degree, a class B felony. A class A felony has a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Cundiff is lodged in the Cundiff Umatilla County jail with bail set at $150,000. The Hermiston Police Department received a call from a citizen regarding possible sexual abuse of a minor. Oficers followed up by interviewing the victim and suspect. The victim, according to police captain Darryl Johnson, is a female juvenile familiar with Cundiff. The interviews led to the charges and arrest. NORTH BEND (AP) — Police have identiied a 25-year-old Coos Bay man as the suspect in a bomb scare last month that caused evacuations in downtown North Bend. North Bend police told The World newspaper of Coos Bay they plan to ile charges of disorderly conduct and possession of a hoax destructive device. The suspect, William Emery, is currently in jail for a probation violation out of Salem. The device that caused alarm was made of various electrical parts, a small electric engine, cardboard, and the remains of a paper shredder housed in plastic wrapping. A passer-by saw it on a window ledge outside of a store. A bomb squad discovered it was not explosive. Oficer placed on leave over Black Lives Matter posts WEST LINN (AP) — Police say an oficer south of Portland is on paid leave after some of his Facebook posts appeared to endorse violence against the Black Lives Matter movement. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that the West Linn Police Department is investigating Oficer Tom Newber- ry’s posts to determine whether he violated department or city policies. West Linn Police Chief Terry Timeus told The Oregonian Thursday he didn’t know enough yet to comment on the investigation but said he was disturbed by what he had seen so far. Timeus said in one post, Newberry shared a story of protesters blocking a road with his comment that when facing “such mobs” to push the “right” car pedal to the loor. Newberry has worked for the police department for seven years. A number The Oregonian tried for Newberry went to a non-working voicemail. Man accused of lying about gunpoint robbery BAKER CITY (AP) — Police arrested a Baker City man accused of falsely reporting he was robbed at gunpoint. The Baker City Herald reports Farhad Radmanish told a 9-1-1 dispatcher on Tuesday that a pair of masked men carrying pistols stole his wallet, cash and cellphone after forcing him to stop his car at an intersection near the Quail Ridge Golf Course. The police department said it found numerous inconsistencies in the 25-year-old man’s story while investigating the case over the next two days. After a follow-up interview Thursday, he was booked into the Baker County Jail on a charge of initiating a false report. Woman accused of helping roommate commit iery suicide PORTLAND (AP) — A 75-year-old woman whose roommate died in a iery suicide has been indicted on a charge she provided help. The authorities say Edna Bennett of Newberg supplied the victim, Ana Frigine-York, with the gasoline she used to light herself on ire June 1. According to a probable cause afidavit, Bennett told the arresting oficer she knew her roommate of eight years would use the gasoline if she needed to escape the demons tormenting her. Bennett said she followed the roommate’s request to remove personal belongings, leave the mobile home and later distribute a letter to police. Court records show Bennett faces charges or arson, manslaughter and conspiracy. Bennett, who owned the mobile home, was released on bail and is scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 25. She has been ordered to continue mental health treatment and avoid contact with the roommate’s family.
