Page 6A RECORDS East Oregonian Saturday, July 2, 2016 OBITUARIES UPCOMING SERVICES Mary Jones Cole Kelly John Wechter Pendleton May 22, 1930-June 29, 2016 Coos Bay June 14, 2016 Mary Jones Cole passed away June 29 in Pendleton at age 86. Mary came into the world on May 22, 1930, to parents George and Myra Jones. Mary’s birth was unexpectedly early and occurred in a hotel room in Keno, Ore., while the family was in the process of moving to Ontario, Ore. Mary grew up attending a one-room school located near their small farm in rural Malhuer County. Following the eighth grade she enrolled at Vale High School, grad- uating in 1947 as Cole class salutatorian. Upon gradua- tion, she was awarded a full college scholarship funded by the Oregon P.T.A. Mary attended Eastern Oregon State College studying elementary education. She received her teaching certii- cation in 1951 and began her career teaching at Elgin, Ore. While in college, Mary met and married the love of her life, Joe Cole. They were married on March 25 in Ontario, Ore., and spent the next 66 wonderful years together. Mary and Joe shared many common interests and spent their lives learning to travel, golf and ski together, many times including family and friends on their adven- tures. Mary’s career in education spanned 28 years. Following her irst year of teaching in Elgin, she moved to Pend- leton while her new husband served in Korea. Mary taught in several Pendleton-area schools including Adams, Washington, McKay and Hawthorne. Her classrooms included kindergarten, irst and fourth grades and the library. Mary inlu- enced many young students in Pend- leton and had fond memories of her career. She was a member of the Pres- byterian Church and the PEO, a ladies organization. Mary is survived by her husband Joe and their two children, daughter Teri (Doug Garton) and son John (Tanja) and granddaughter Elizabeth Garton. She was preceded in death by half-sisters Mercedes Truax and Harriet Jones; half-brothers George Jones and Francis Jones; and grandson, Patrick Garton. Celebration of Life to be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Pendleton on July 7, 2016, at 11 a.m. Following the service, there will be a gathering in the Rodgers Fellowship room. In lieu of lowers, contri- butions in Mary’s memory may be made to the Retired Pendleton Teachers Schol- arship Fund, PEO Chapter E.M. Scholarship Fund or the Pendleton Library. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.pioneerchapel.com Kelly John Wechter, 47, surrounded by family went home to be with the Lord June 14th, 2016, after courageously ighting a four-month battle with cancer. Kelly grew up and attended school as a Coquille Red Devil where he excelled in all sports. He went on to further his education at Linn- Benton Commu- nity College, where he played two years of basketball. He also attended the University of Oregon for two years. Wechter Kelly had a special gift for inspiring and positively encouraging every person he came into contact with. His infectious laugh and magnetic personality were the qualities that drew so many people to him. He was a fearless competitor playing football, basketball and track. Other passions included his Native American heritage, hunting, ishing, and supporting all Oregon Duck teams. Recently he had begun oficiating basketball games in his spare time. One other passion was his love for Alabama football — “Roll Tide.” Kelly’s greatest sport achievement the game of golf, led him to his life’s career as a golf professional at Kah-Nee-Ta, Tetherow, and inally Wildhorse Resort in Pendleton. Kelly is survived by his mother and stepfather, Terry and Bill Middleton; father Gene Wechter; his irst love Kerrie Phillips Lucero; sibling and brother-in-law Crissy and Sam Shellhamer; siblings Melissa Beebe, Jeff Warren, Wendy Strode and Coby Wechter; son and granddaughter Aaron and Kaya Wechter; uncles and aunts Richard and Carrie Ann Shields, Richy and Rosemary Courtright, aunt Cory Courtright and uncle Terry Wechter. He is also survived by numerous cousins. Kelly was preceded in death by his sister Angle Jones, cousin Leah Freeman, aunt Gayle Wechter, grand- parents John and Dorothy Courtright, and grandfather Gene Wechter Sr. Services will be held at Watson’s Ranch Golf Course, 93884 Coos- Sumner Lane (formerly Coos Country Club) in Coos Bay, Oregon, on Friday, July 8th at 2:00 p.m. Cremation rites were held at Ocean View Crema- tory in Coos Bay. HELIX SCHOOL BOARD, 7:30, Helix School library, 120 Main St. Union considers killing nuisance deer LA GRANDE (AP) — Deer have become a nuisance in the small eastern Oregon city of Union and the council is considering killing some of the animals to control their population. The La Grande Observer reports that residents in the city of 2,000 have been complaining about deer eating garden plants, causing property damage and injuring pets. Shooting deer inside city limits is illegal unless the council and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife obtain a kill permit. Is such a permit is granted, a government hunter would be allowed in. Rod McKee, the city’s public works director, said the proposed plan also calls for stronger enforcement of a city ordinance that prohibits people from feeding deer, which would discourage some of the animals from staying in Union. McKee said the plan’s aim is eliminate a portion of the city’s deer population, not all of it. He said some deer-human conlict would remain, but he wouldn’t want to see the place deer-free. If the city goes ahead with the use of force, bucks and does would be taken in late fall and winter, when fawns are old enough to survive on their own.
