Page 6A TV TIME East Oregonian Wednesday, June 15, 2016 ‘Highly offensive’: GOP lawmakers distance selves from Trump WASHINGTON (AP) — Dismayed Republicans scrambled for cover Tuesday from Donald Trump’s inÀammatory response to the Orlando massacre, while President Barack Obama and Democrat Hillary Clinton delivered ¿ery denunciations that underscored the potential peril for the GOP. Republican hopes are fading for a new, “more pres- idential” Trump as the party’s divisions around him grow ever more acute. Clinton, campaigning in Pittsburgh before her Tuesday night win in the Washington, D.C., Democratic primary, said: “We don’t need conspiracy theories and pathological self-congratula- tions. We need leadership and concrete plans because we are facing a brutal enemy.” In Washington, Obama said of Muslim-Americans: “Are we going to start subjecting them to special surveillance? Are we going to discriminate against them because of their faith?” After meeting with counterter- rorism of¿cials, a stern-faced Obama said: “We heard these suggestions during the course of this campaign. Do Repub- lican of¿cials actually agree with this? Because that’s not the America we want.” Several of Trump’s fellow Republicans clearly did not agree with him. They were nearly as unsparing as the Democrats in their criticism of his boundary-pushing response Monday to the killing of 49 people at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, by an American-born Muslim who pledged loyalty to the Islamic State group. Among other things, Trump suggested moderate Muslims and perhaps even Obama himself might sympa- thi]e with radical elements. He renewed his call to tempo- rarily ban foreign Muslims from entering the country, and added a new element: a suspension of immigration from areas of the world with a proven history of terrorism against the U.S. and its allies. “Mr. Trump seems to be suggesting that the president is one of them, I ¿nd that highly offensive, I ¿nd that whole line of reasoning way off-base,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. “Mr. Trump’s reaction to declare war on the faith is the worst possible solution.” GOP Rep. Adam .in]inger of Illinois said Trump’s comments could be used to radicali]e uneducated Muslims. “I guess I appreciate Mr. Trump’s ¿eriness in talking about it, and strength, but you don’t do it by alienating the very people we need and those are moderate Muslims,” said .in]inger. “To use religion as a test, to say we’re going to discrimi- nate against all Muslims, is so counterproductive it really almost doesn’t deserve being talked about.” Trump responded to Obama’s criticism in a state- ment accusing the president of continuing “to prioriti]e our enemy over our allies.” At a ¿ery rally hours later in Greensboro, North Carolina, Trump said the president appeared angrier at him than he was at the Orlando gunman. “That’s the kind of anger he should have for the shooter and these killers that shouldn’t be here,” Trump told the crowd, echoing comments he made to a conservative radio host Monday. Speaking to thousands of supporters for the ¿rst time since the attacks, Trump repeated several falsehoods made in his Monday speech. (AP) — The murky picture of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen grew more complex Tuesday with word that the FBI is investigating whether he had been a regular at the gay dance club he attacked and had been leading a secret life as a gay man. As victims described the bloody horror of the massacre during a riveting hospital news conference, investigators continued to gather information on the 29-year-old American-born Muslim — and took a close look at his wife, too — for clues to the attack that left 49 victims dead. An of¿cial who was briefed on the progress of the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation said authorities believe Mateen’s wife knew about the plot ahead of time, but they are reluctant to charge her on that basis alone. A number of possible explanations and motives for the bloodbath have emerged, with Mateen professing allegiance to the Islamic State group in a 911 call during the attack, his ex-wife saying he was mentally ill, and his father suggesting he was driven by hatred of gays. On Tuesday, a U.S. of¿cial said the FBI is looking into a Àurry of news reports quoting patrons of the Pulse as saying that Mateen frequented the nightspot and reached out to men on gay dating apps. The of¿cial was not authori]ed to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. Some psychologists raised the possibility that Mateen was sexually conÀicted and lashed out against gays, or that he was casing the nightclub for an attack and trying to ¿nd victims online.
