Sgt. Dwight Johnson spoke to Wright on the phone and identiied her general location, and members of search and rescue responded. They determined a tow truck would be able to reach her and free the vehicle, but Wright reported she could not afford the tow bill, and instead called friends to help her. The friends did not arrive, however, and at about 11 p.m., search and rescue members drove Wright to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Pendleton ofice, where a family member picked her up. • At about 7 p.m., Danny Davis reported his friend Mark Gilliland was about two hours overdue after they were mushroom hunting near Government Mountain Road. The two Walla Walla men were hiking and supposed to meet at 5 p.m. Davis’ car. Search and rescue began searching for Gilliland and tried to reach his cellphone and other family members to ind out if they heard from him. At about 10:15 p.m., COURTS PENDLETON — The following suits have been iled in Uma- tilla County courts: East Oregonian Davis reported that Gilliland called a friend and said he hiked to Four Corners recre- ation site, where the friend picked him up. • Just after midnight, Melanie Medina, a resident assistant from Whitman College in Walla Walla, contacted dispatch to report that ive freshmen students from the school were overdue from a trip to the Tiger Canyon area in northern Umatilla County. The group did not return before dark as scheduled and none could be reached by cellphone. At about 1 a.m., search and rescue members began traveling to the area. They determined the group might be near Klicker Mountain Road in southern Wash- ington. At about 2:45 a.m., one of the students contacted Medina by text message and reported that they were on their way back to Walla Walla and all were safe. The student said their vehicle was stuck in the snow, which delayed them. By about 3:30 a.m., the group had reportedly returned safely to the college. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice Search and Rescue Unit provides an organized, mostly volunteer search and rescue team devoted to helping lost and missing people, overdue hunters and stranded motor- ists. They also provide aid in medical emergencies.
