Page 2A V-J DAY East Oregonian Saturday, August 15, 2015 PENDLETON For those who fought and died Army Band celebrates the ending of WWII By JONATHAN BACH East Oregonian Barbara Jensen’s mother Joy Beebes was digging potatoes by the English Channel while soldiers clashed in France. During World War II, Beebes could see the war play out away from the coast, according to her daughter. Once Britain itself came under ¿re from the *ermans, her mother’s family lived under a table with netting around it to protect them from the shrapnel of explosions. Jensen was inspired by her mother to found the Oregon Spirit of ‘45 founda- tion, the group that hosted a commemoration of men and women who lived through World War II. The stop at the Vert Auditorium in Pendleton was the ¿fth in a statewide tour for the 70th anniversary of the conÀict’s conclusion on August 14, 1945. The tour started in Salem; has wound its way to Eugene, Medford and Bend; and ends in Clack- amas on Saturday. In 2013, Oregon became the ¿rst state to establish by legislation that the men and women of the World War II generation be honored second Sunday of August each year. Jensen said she, Oregon Rep. Julie Parrish and State Sen. Brian Boquist worked to bring the Spirit of ‘45 Day into fruition. Jensen said she wanted to honor not only the Americans who served overseas, but also those on the home front during the war who built ships and fueled the effort. The walls of the hall at the Vert rang with patriotic notes from the 234th Army Band, conducted by Army Chief Warrant Of¿cer Ashley Alex- ander. All the while, montage of newsreels from the war played on a screen behind the servicemen and women on stage as the band played through a full set of excited, solemn and serious period music. “Taps” was played to AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews Married couple Oscar Gifford, from New York, and Ales- sandra Ciani, right, from Palmanova, Italy, kiss before scores re-enact the iconic 1945 Alfred Eisenstaedt kiss photo, Thursday in New York’s Times Square. Dozens of couples gathered in New York’s Times Square to re-en- act a famous kiss that celebrated the end of World War II. A 25-foot high sculpture replica of the original kiss, top rear left, entitled “Embracing Peace” is in Times Square until Sunday during the celebration. Couples gather in NYC to re-enact kiss at war’s end NEW YORK (AP) — With a countdown of “¿ve, four, three, two, one, smooch,” couples from across the world puckered up in Times Square on Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of the famous kiss celebrating the end of World War II. A 25-foot sculpture depicting Alfred Eisen- staedt’s photograph of a sailor kissing a white-uni- formed nurse towered over the commemoration of V-J Day, when Japan’s surrender to Allied forces was announced. Ray and Ellie Williams, Navy veterans who married the day after V-J Day, kicked off the anniversary of the kiss Aug. 14, 1945. “Ellie and I are deeply honored and privileged to represent the greatest gener- ation here today,” said Ray Williams, 91, of Blairsville, *eorgia. Williams remembered jubilation breaking out on V-J Day all over the country, including in *ainesville, *eorgia, where he and his bride-to-be were stationed. “We were doubly excited about celebrating the end of the war and also our marriage,” he said. Roel van Dalen and Beatrijs Smulders, visitors from Amsterdam, said they were happy to take part in the commemoration. “It’s very beautiful to commemorate such an incredible event,” van Dalen said. “Especially for us. We come from a country which was occupied by the *ermans ... and we’re still faced with all the horrifying stories of the war.” Smulders said she was struck by the image of the kiss. “I think it’s really a beau- tiful symbol of peace and love,” she said. “I love these kinds of rituals.” Staff photo by Jonathan Bach Army Chief Warrant Officer Ashley Alexander salutes veterans during Friday’s “Spirit of ‘45” concert in the Vert Auditorium. As an addition to the Army Band, the trio String of Pearls, dressed in red, sang through hits from the Andrews Sisters, including “I’ll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time” and “Bei Mir Bist Du Shoen.” Staff Sgt. /eslie *ale, whose mother is part of the roughly 20-year-old trio, approached the tour’s organizers about the fact that the group wanted to donate time to travel around Oregon with Spirit of ‘45. *ale also ended up ¿lling in for one of its members, learning their SUBSCRIPTION RATES /RFDOKRPHGHOLYHU\ 6DYLQJVRIIFRYHUSULFH (=3D\ SHUFHQW ZHHNV SHUFHQW ZHHNV SHUFHQW ZHHNV SHUFHQW (=3D\ RQH\HDUUDWHZLWKDPRQWKO\FUHGLWRUGHELWFDUGFKHFNFKDUJH www.eastoregonian.com To subscribe, call 1-800-522-0255 or go online to www.eastoregonian.com and click on ‘Subscribe’ (DVW2UHJRQLDQ(USPS 164-980)LVSXEOLVKHGGDLO\H[FHSW6XQGD\0RQGD\ DQG'HFE\WKH(20HGLD*URXS6(%\HUV$YH3HQGOHWRQ25 3HULRGLFDOVSRVWDJHSDLGDW3HQGOHWRQ25Postmaster:VHQGDGGUHVVFKDQJHVWR (DVW2UHJRQLDQ6(%\HUV$YH3HQGOHWRQ25 Single copy price: 7XHVGD\WKURXJK)ULGD\6DWXUGD\ Copyright © 2015, EO Media Group TODAY SUNDAY MONDAY Sunshine and pleasant Pleasant with plenty of sunshine Sunny and nice 82° 53° 82° 56° TUESDAY WEDNESDAY Pleasant with plenty of sun Abundant sunshine and nice PENDLETON TEMPERATURE FORECAST 85° 59° 91° 62° 94° 65° HERMISTON TEMPERATURE FORECAST 84° 51° 85° 53° PENDLETON through 3 p.m. yesterday TEMPERATURE HIGH LOW 82° 88° 107° (1933) 65° 58° 40° (1910) PRECIPITATION 24 hours ending 3 p.m. Month to date Normal month to date Year to date Last year to date Normal year to date 0.00" Trace 0.18" 5.00" 7.96" 8.13" HERMISTON through 3 p.m. yesterday TEMPERATURE Yesterday Normals Records HIGH LOW 82° 88° 105° (1992) 72° 58° 44° (1931) PRECIPITATION 24 hours ending 3 p.m. Month to date Normal month to date Year to date Last year to date Normal year to date 0.00" Trace 0.09" 3.25" 4.85" 6.01" SUN AND MOON Sunrise today Sunset tonight Moonrise today Moonset today First Full Aug 22 Aug 29 92° 57° 95° 61° Seattle 74/57 ALMANAC Yesterday Normals Records 89° 55° Last 5:55 a.m. 8:04 p.m. 7:04 a.m. 8:25 p.m. New Sep 5 Sep 12 Spokane Wenatchee 76/52 83/59 Tacoma Moses 74/50 Lake Pullman Aberdeen Olympia Yakima 82/54 76/46 70/50 75/47 84/49 Longview Kennewick Walla Walla 73/50 84/58 Lewiston 85/51 Astoria 85/57 71/53 Portland Enterprise Hermiston 77/56 Pendleton 79/47 The Dalles 84/51 82/53 82/55 La Grande Salem 81/44 80/53 Albany Corvallis 80/52 81/49 John Day 82/49 Ontario Eugene Bend 87/55 82/48 79/42 Caldwell Burns 86/54 83/42 Medford 90/55 Astoria Baker City Bend Brookings Burns Enterprise Eugene Heppner Hermiston John Day Klamath Falls La Grande Meacham Medford Newport North Bend Ontario Pasco Pendleton Portland Redmond Salem Spokane Ukiah Vancouver Walla Walla Yakima REGIONAL FORECAST Eastern Washington: Mostly sunny today.
