Army Band
celebrates the
ending of WWII

Barbara Jensen’s mother
Joy Beebes was digging
potatoes by the English
Channel while soldiers
clashed in France.
During World War II,
Beebes could see the war
play out away from the coast,
according to her daughter.
Once Britain itself came
under ¿re from the *ermans,
her mother’s family lived
under a table with netting
around it to protect them from
the shrapnel of explosions.
Jensen was inspired by
her mother to found the
Oregon Spirit of ‘45 founda-
tion, the group that hosted a
commemoration of men and
women who lived through
World War II. The stop at the
Vert Auditorium in Pendleton
was the ¿fth in a statewide
tour for the 70th anniversary
of the conÀict’s conclusion
on August 14, 1945. The tour
started in Salem; has wound
its way to Eugene, Medford
and Bend; and ends in Clack-
amas on Saturday.
In 2013, Oregon became
the ¿rst state to establish by
legislation that the men and
women of the World War
II generation be honored
second Sunday of August
each year. Jensen said she,
Oregon Rep. Julie Parrish
and State Sen. Brian Boquist
worked to bring the Spirit of
‘45 Day into fruition.
Jensen said she wanted to
honor not only the Americans
who served overseas, but
also those on the home front
during the war who built
ships and fueled the effort.
The walls of the hall at the
Vert rang with patriotic notes
from the 234th Army Band,
conducted by Army Chief
Warrant Of¿cer Ashley Alex-
ander. All the while, montage
of newsreels from the war
played on a screen behind
the servicemen and women
on stage as the band played
through a full set of excited,
solemn and serious period

— With a countdown of
“¿ve, four, three, two, one,
smooch,” couples from
across the world puckered up
in Times Square on Friday to
mark the 70th anniversary of
the famous kiss celebrating
the end of World War II.

surrender to Allied forces
was announced.
Ray and Ellie Williams,
Navy veterans who married
the day after V-J Day, kicked
off the anniversary of the
kiss Aug. 14, 1945.
“Ellie and I are deeply
honored and privileged to
represent the greatest gener-
ation here today,” said Ray
Williams, 91, of Blairsville,
*eorgia.
Williams
remembered
jubilation breaking out on
V-J Day all over the country,
including in *ainesville,
*eorgia, where he and his
bride-to-be were stationed.
“We were doubly excited
about celebrating the end
of the war and also our
marriage,” he said.
Roel van Dalen and
Beatrijs Smulders, visitors
from Amsterdam, said they
were happy to take part in
the commemoration.
“It’s very beautiful to
commemorate such an
incredible event,” van Dalen
said. “Especially for us.
We come from a country
which was occupied by the
*ermans ... and we’re still
faced with all the horrifying
stories of the war.”
Smulders said she was
struck by the image of the
kiss.
“I think it’s really a beau-
tiful symbol of peace and
love,” she said. “I love these
kinds of rituals.”

honor fallen soldiers
At one point, the
announcer of the newsreels
proclaimed, “We didn’t start
this war, but we can ¿nish
it,” of the United States’
involvement in a conÀict
that claimed almost a half a
million American lives.
As an addition to the
Army Band, the trio String
of Pearls, dressed in red,
sang through hits from the
Andrews Sisters, including
“I’ll Be with You in Apple
Blossom Time” and “Bei Mir
Bist Du Shoen.”
Staff Sgt. /eslie *ale,
whose mother is part of
the roughly 20-year-old
trio, approached the tour’s
organizers about the fact that
the group wanted to donate
time to travel around Oregon
with Spirit of ‘45. *ale also
ended up ¿lling in for one of
its members, learning their
