Brunner Hermiston November 1, 1925-June 15, 2015 Hermiston December 28, 1933-June 23, 2015 Fossil May 23, 1928-June 25, 2015 Buster was born in Scotia, California, the son of Stewart and Mathilda Duchmann Atwell, Nov. 1, 1925. He died at his home June 15, 2015, at the age of 89. Buster grew up in Eureka, Cali- fornia, and served as Seaman First Class, radio airman, LQ WKH 3DFL¿F During WWII until his honorable discharge. He worked construction as superintendent on many projects throughout Oregon and California. Atwell Buster enjoyed KXQWLQJ ¿VKLQJ camping, trap shooting, playing cards, feeding quail in his yard, scenic drives, building in his shop and sharing this with family. He is survived by his wife, Donna; children Michael Atwell, Osburn, Idaho, Bruce Atwell, Hayfork, Calif., Suzanne Atwell, Granite, Idaho, Vicky Atwell, Middleton, Idaho, Peggy Ibarra, Hermiston, Ore., Laurie Atwell, Hermiston, Ore., and Elaine Silva, Grants Pass, Ore.; sisters Anita Brazil, Fields Landing, Calif., Colleen Cruz, Eureka, Calif., and Joan Golbov, Sparks, Nev.; and numerous grand- and great-grandchil- dren. We survivors gather to honor a humble, quiet, generous, sometimes mischievous family man. We smile remembering the hunting and camping trips, the playhouse, paddleball, card games, table games, help with homework and school projects, all the wooden toys, stools, clocks, stilts and lamps he made for us. He taught us to drive a standard transmission while recovering from major back surgery, to give an honest day’s work for your pay, honesty, responsibility, “put tools back where you got them,” how to get coconut out of the shell, and to know we could always count on each other. We will miss the hugs, your knowledge we never got all of, the smiles when we played a good game of pinochle, and when we’d show up, just because. We love you, learned from you, passed on what we have learned and miss you terribly. As we say goodbye to our beloved grandfather, you will be missed and continue to remain in our hearts. We are proud you were our grandfa- ther. SCHOOL Charleston Southern Dean’s List CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jacob Scott Moore of Pendleton was recently named to Charleston Southern University’s spring 2015 Dean’s List. Dean’s List students at CSU have earned a 3.5 GPA or better and earned 12 credit hours or more for the semester. John Raymond “Jack” Sobotta passed away peace- fully on Tuesday, June 23rd, in Hermiston surrounded by family. He was born in 1933 in Lewistown, Montana, and was raised in Lapwai, Idaho, on the Nez Perce Reservation, WKH ¿IWK RI VHYHQ siblings. His father owned the town barber shop and his mother operated a restau- rant that the family lived above on Main Street. Jack became immersed in the Native American Sobotta culture, traditions and friendships during his youth and fondly recalled playing in the grassy hills of the Palouse, swim- ming in the Clearwater River, shooting pool with the adults at his father’s business and working for various farmers to make enough money to buy books and baseballs. Jack played varsity basketball and baseball for the Lapwai High Wildcats before attending Gonzaga University and earning his degree from the Washington State University College of Pharmacy in Pullman, Wash- ington, in 1956. He completed his U.S. Army basic training at Fort Ord, California, in 1958 and served on active reserve duty until 1965. -DFN WRRN KLV ¿UVW MRE out of college in Chewelah, Washington, where he met and later married Eileen Rose Hansen in Spokane, Washington, on November 7, 1959. He moved his family to rainy Longview, Wash- LQJWRQ LQ DQG ¿QDOO\ settled in sunny Hermiston, Oregon, in 1966 where he worked as a pharmacist at the Hermiston Drug and raised eight children. In 1971 he partnered with his brother Jerry Sobotta to buy and operate the Hermiston Drug Store and later the Orchard Pharmacy. This is where Jack left his mark on the greater Hermiston commu- QLW\ WKURXJK KLV VHOÀHVVQHVV and dedication to serving his customers, employees and medical partners for over 27 years before his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed many special trips including a religious and aid pilgrimage to the holy sites in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, tours of various Civil War battle- ¿HOGVLQWKHHDVWHUQ United States and to South Bend, Indiana, to watch his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team play. Jack spent his free time meticu- lously manicuring his yard when he was not attending a ballgame of one of his children, grandchildren or great-grandchil- dren. He was a passionate reader about the Catholic faith, studied Native Amer- ican history and folklore and was a Civil War buff. He loved spending time visiting with friends and relatives and also rooting for his Wash- ington State Cougs, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Fighting Irish and Seattle Mariners. Jack is survived by his wife Eileen Sobotta of Herm- iston, Ore.; sister Rosemary Webb of Lapwai, Idaho; brothers Jerry (Kay) Sobotta of Hermiston, Ore., and Bob (Loretta) Sobotta of Boise, Idaho; daughters Cheryl (Dan) Riley of Kennewick, Wash., Rita (Dave) Davis of Hermiston, Ore., and Debbie (John) Tolan of La Grande, Ore.; sons Rick (Nancy) Barnhart of Tigard, Ore., Perry Sobotta of Hermiston, Ore., Sam (Lisa) Sobotta of Bend, Ore., Matt (Davi) Sobotta of Seattle, Wash., and Tom (Heather) Sobotta of West Linn, Ore., as well as 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents George and Ann Sobotta, brothers George Sobotta Jr. and Dick Sobotta, sister Gloria Mullay and great-grandchild Eastin Strebin. Recitation of the Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 29th, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, with burial to follow in the Hermiston Cemetery.
