The House voted 392- 37 on Thursday to pass the bill that permanently blocks physician Medicare cuts. It now goes to the Senate. Attached to the bill is a two-year renewal of the Secure Rural Schools Program, which expired last year amid partisan disagreements. That program paid subsidies to rural timber companies around the country to make up for declining federal timber revenues from logging. Timber harvests have been UHGXFHGWRSURWHFW¿VK wildlife and clean water. Last year Oregon got about $100 million of the $500 million paid nationwide. Narcotics dog who ingested meth during search dies TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Barney, the Tacoma police narcotics dog that became sick after ingesting methamphetamine during a drug investigation, has died. The Olympian reports that the 11-year-old black Labrador mix died Wednesday night. +LVKDQGOHU2I¿FHU Henry Betts, rushed him to a veterinary hospital on Tuesday after the dog touched his nose to meth at a Puyallup storage unit. He ZDVZLWKRI¿FHUVZKRZHUH serving a search warrant. Narcotics dogs are trained to alert their handlers to drugs by placing their nose on them. In this case, Barney accidentally inhaled residue from the meth. Vets said Barney was more responsive Wednesday morning but he passed away that evening. Pierce County prosecutors say they haven’t decided whether they’ll amend charges against the three defendants to include Barney’s death. Chip Shields of Portland didn’t violate Senate rules. Shields asked state Rep. Lew Frederick to introduce a bill requiring the use of biodegradable lubricants in public construction projects. Shields’ family owns a company that makes such lubricants. Shields has withdrawn the bill but told the disciplinary committee that nearly all lubricant makers have biodegradable products, so the legislation wouldn’t give his company an advantage.
