House passes bill
with money for
timber counties
GRANTS PASS (AP) —
The U.S. House has passed
a Medicare bill that includes
renewal of a program that
pays subsidies to timber
counties, especially in
Oregon.
The House voted 392-
37 on Thursday to pass the
bill that permanently blocks
physician Medicare cuts. It
now goes to the Senate.
Attached to the bill
is a two-year renewal of
the Secure Rural Schools
Program, which expired
last year amid partisan
disagreements.
That program paid
subsidies to rural timber
companies around the
country to make up for
declining federal timber
revenues from logging.
Timber harvests have been

Last year Oregon got
about $100 million of
the $500 million paid
nationwide.
Narcotics dog who
ingested meth
during search dies
TACOMA, Wash. (AP)
— Barney, the Tacoma
police narcotics dog that
became sick after ingesting
methamphetamine during a
drug investigation, has died.
The Olympian reports
that the 11-year-old
black Labrador mix died
Wednesday night.

on them. In this case, Barney
accidentally inhaled residue
from the meth.
Vets said Barney was
more responsive Wednesday
morning but he passed away

whether they’ll amend
charges against the three
defendants to include
Barney’s death.

State agency hacked; governor calls for study, changes

Brown said. But metadata,
such as the sizes of data and
the timestamps of messag-
es, were compromised, said

“Although I have been
assured that no personally
identifying information was
compromised, this incident
causes me to have serious
concerns about the integrity
of state data,” Brown said.
Software detected an
intrusion into the agency’s
network, which happened
three days before it was de-
tected, Grainger said.
