Beverley Jean ‘Bev’ Hall Charles Martin Lorence Hermiston September 22, 1945-January 28, 2015 Umatilla February 18, 1918 - January 15, 2015 Beverley Jean “Bev” Hall was born on September 22, 1945, in Wallowa, Oregon, to parents Fredrick and Vera Shelton Hockett. She died on January 28, 2015, at her home in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 69 years. Bev was raised and at- tended schools in Hermiston, Oregon. She graduated from Hermiston High School in the class of 1963. Bev lived most of her life in Hermiston, Oregon. She worked as a cook at McCabe’s Restaurant, at the McNary Dam, at the deli in Wal- Hall Mart, and she also worked at McNary 'DPDVD¿VKFRXQWHUDQGRQ grounds maintenance. Bev had a natural calling for helping and caring for others. She enjoyed read- ing, spending time with her grand-babies, her kids, cook- ing, the outdoors, the ocean, and gardening. Subject to Change. Check ONLINE for more information! Charles Martin Lorence, 96, of Umatilla, Ore., passed away at the Chaplaincy Hos- pice House in Kennewick, Wash., Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015. He was born in Silverton, Ore., to Andrew and Marjo- rie (Hayes) Lorence and was raised on the family farm in the Waldo Hills. At age 16 he received a football injury that left him with a fused hip joint and a left leg 2 inches shorter than his right leg. Fol- lowing his recovery he was determined that a “short leg” ZRXOG QRW GH¿QH Lorence or limit his quality of life. So what if he could not run fast or ride a horse, he could still work harder, longer or smarter than others to accomplish his goals. In 1936 the fami- ly moved to Yakima, Wash., where he met and married Kathleen Pollock in July 1940. They enjoyed a 71- year marriage and had a son, Robert James, and a daugh- ter, Kathleen May. Charles was a dedicated family man who believed in a strong work ethic and traditional family values. During the Depression years he worked any job he could ¿QG DQG EULHÀ\ PRYHG WKH family to Seattle to work at Boeing prior to going to Alaska to work on the con- struction of the Alaska High- way as a truck driver and mechanic. Following the end of the war, Charles returned home and served as a truck driver and mechanic, follow- ing Turtling around the state RI:DVKLQJWRQIRU¿YH\HDUV In 1949, he joined his broth- er (Bob) and brother-in-law (Al Pollock) to build and operate ABC Service Station and Garage in Umatilla, Ore. In 1962 Charles and Kathleen moved the fami- ly to Easton, Wash., where they built and operated Lake Easton Resort for 12 years. During this time Charles also worked as a building contractor building a doz- en A-frame cabins in the Easton-Cle Elem area as well as driving a snowplow, keeping the pass clear in the winter, and logging trucks in the summer. In 1973 they sold the re- sort and spent the next 38 \HDUV VDOPRQ ¿VKLQJ DW WKH mouth of the Columbia River and Alaska as well as travel- ing throughout the U.S. and Canada in their travel trailer. Ultimately they be- came “snowbirds,” spending 38 win- ters at Good Life RV Resort in Mesa, Arizona. In 1999 they returned to Umatilla to spend their summers near their extended fam- ily. Charles was re- vered by numerous nieces and nephews who enjoyed his numerous sto- ries of life on the farm, the 'HSUHVVLRQ HUD ¿VKLQJ DQG working in the North Coun- try as well as his many lec- tures on life in general that always ended with “work hard, save your money and pay your taxes.” Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 71 years, Kathleen, and his brother Robert Andrew. He is survived by his sister Ruby Snoey; his son Rob- ert James and wife Judith; daughter Kathleen McMa- nus and husband Thomas; grandchildren Jon Charles Lorence and wife Tricia, Robert Alexander Lorence and wife Dee, and Jennifer Westling and husband Craig; and seven great-grandchil- dren. He took special plea- sure in giving his grandchil- dren lectures dealing with ethics, family values and the EHQH¿WVRIKLJKHUHGXFDWLRQ and saving their money.
