The first grassfires of the seasoi In Pendleton occurred yesterday when two fires broke out in th East end Of Pendleton. Rlngold. of the fire department, states that there is much danger from dry grass and urges property owners to keei the grass cut. See Western Mocking Bird A Western mocking bird, a rarity in Eastern Oregon, according to local bird lovers, as seen recently by Jim Bose and H. R. Neil on the Roso ranch on McKay creek. The bird ii common , in southern Calif ornlh, -and northern Mexico and migrates to the. northern part of the -state and to th higher uplands, but it is rarely seen here. . In color the mocking bird is p. grayish drab. The wings and tail arn blackish with some white jspotH on th wings. The breast is white, washed with a clay color. As Its name signi fies, the mocking bird Imitates the calls of other birds and even of some ground animals. J A demonstration was held at Athe na yesterday by Mrs. Edith G. Van Deusen, home demonstration agent, for the benefit of Athena women. A test circular was begun for an elec trio tireless cooker. Russell Akey, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Akey, is at Seaback, Wash ington, attending the conference of students' Y. M. C. A., according to a letter Teceived here by his par ents. Young Akey is a student at Whitman college and will be graduated next year. Sirs. Hull Convalescing. " Mrs. Elsie Hall, young Pendleton woman who suffered serious Injuries from bullets fired by her husband, Floyd Hall, Is convalescing in Port land, according to word; received here. She Is under the care of spe cialists and an inter-dental splint, of platinum, has been made for her jaw which was shattered by a bullet.
