A Western mocking bird, a rarity in
Eastern Oregon, according to local
bird lovers, as seen recently by Jim
Bose and H. R. Neil on the Roso
ranch on McKay creek. The bird ii
common , in southern Calif ornlh, -and
northern Mexico and migrates to the.
northern part of the -state and to th
higher uplands, but it is rarely seen
here. . In color the mocking bird is p.
grayish drab. The wings and tail arn
blackish with some white jspotH on th
wings. The breast is white, washed
with a clay color. As Its name signi
fies, the mocking bird Imitates the
calls of other birds and even of some
ground animals. The males are won
derful singers.

Calls for Material.
Requests for additional material in
the way of pictures and specimens to
add to the attractiveness of Umatilla
county's exhibft at the Oregon Sports
men's and Tourists' Exhibit have
been made by Secretary 0. I. Barr,
who is now at Portland In charge of
the booth, according to President L. C.
Scharpf of the Pendleton Association.
A tepee was also wanted by Barr, and
Chairneey Bishop rustled this piece of
property to add to the color of the exhibit.
Demonstration Held. J
A demonstration was held at Athe
na yesterday by Mrs. Edith G. Van
Deusen, home demonstration agent,
for the benefit of Athena women. A
test circular was begun for an elec
trio tireless cooker. Other devices
discussed were electric cream whlp-
pers and electric hot water heaters,

motor on Friday for San Francisco,
to attend the national convention of

on the Maverick."

The annual picnic of the Odd Fel
low, and RebeKah lodges will be held
Sunday at Mission. Members of the
order and their families will gather
at the I. O. O. F. hall at 8 o'clock in
the morning, where transportation will
be furnisehd to those who do not have
a way to get to the grounds. Con
tests, baseball games and other ath
letic events will be enjoyed. A big
basket dinner will be spread at the
noon hour. " -
Russell Akey at Conference.
Russell Akey, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Akey, is at Seaback, Wash
ington, attending the conference of
students' Y. M. C. A., according to
a letter Teceived here by his par
ents. After the conference is con
cluded he will, go to Everett, -Washington,
where he will be employed in
the J. C. Penney store during 'the
summer. Young Akey is a student
at Whitman college and will be
graduated next year.
Sirs. Hull Convalescing. "
Mrs. Elsie Hall, young Pendleton
woman who suffered serious Injuries
from bullets fired by her husband,
Floyd Hall, Is convalescing in Port
land, according to word; received
here. She Is under the care of spe
cialists and an inter-dental splint, of
platinum, has been made for her jaw
which was shattered by a bullet. If
after a three months' trial the splint
proves not satisfactory, a bone trans
plant will be "made. . Kali Is being
held in the county Jail until the full
extent of his wife's injuries are ascer
tained. .. . .'
