"Oandhl won his position by pursuing a policy of doing no wrong, commit- ting no violence, but simply enduring Oil the punishments the other side could Inflict on him until they all be- came weary and ashamed of punish Ing." . That is how Prof. Gilbert Murray desoribes Mohanda Karamohand ' Gandhi, the Indian agitator, whose 4)ttvel8 sa frequently mentioned In re- ' spect to tne native uprisings in inuia on the occasion of the present visit of the Prince of Wales to India. Gandhi studied law In Great Britain , about the venr 1889. but instead of r.o- ing back to his native land, like many of h!s contemporaries who had tho advantage of a European education, a confirmed British loyalist he whole- heartedly embraced the Hindu cause and was a constant and virulent agi- tator for their rights. Gandhi is a Jain, a ;ery high caste of Hindu, and he came from rich par ents. He took the usual Jain vow, that nf an abstinence from alcohol and cow's flesh, because to the Jains a cow is a sacred animal; and an ab stinence from pork and bacon because the pig is an unclean animal. He took his law degree and for a time practiced law In Bombay, but he cared more for religion than law. He becaane an ascetic and gradually gave away his money to good causes, keep ing for himself only a meaisre allow ance. Finally he forsook the lawyer's profession, because he could not con- i 8c)ejitiously follow a profession which believed in might to force its rights. In 1914 he was a very patriotic sup porter of Britain's war against Oer jnany, and from Its results he expected a better India for Indians, iiresper five i.f rflste and relig'n, ' ! the ex clusion from the:r native domains of the material interests, the industrial lavery and the money and power wor hlp of the west. The result was a chock to his Ideals, and ever since he has been engaged In constant passive resistance to the gov ernment and hos always striven to en noble and raise the status of the In dian, not bo much in the eyes of the 3ACK.FrlO$T SAYS THAT FlXND PIT- AS PLUMBERS HAVE MADfcaUVTEArMTv We're avowedly an en emy of Jack Frost and an ally of Comfort. ' Unlike other revolutionaries! hoiK ever, he has always come willingly to tne aid os the government in a crisis. In 1904 there was an outbreak of plague in Johannesburg, and Gandhi opened up a private hospital long be fore the government had time to act. In 1913, while he was being con stantly imprisoned by the government in South Africa, the railway strike broke out, and transportation In the Transvaal was paralyzed. From the ordinary agitator's point of view this would have been his supreme moment to strike his blow at the organized so 'clcly of gouth Africtti bm relenteu i and gave orders to his people to re- work and aid the governnlent t0 keep order.
