Elementary School Play Centers -When the Director of Physical Edu cation Is in charge of classes or swim ming Instruction at the Community Houm during after-school hours, the Director of Recreation can visit these centers and by Instruction of pupil leaders on Saturday mornings ensure good use of these playgrounds with comparatively little help from the gradei teachers. An Klementary School Athletic League should be formed, teams organised, group ath letics encouraged, competitions or ranged for both boy and girls, and the grade school teachers should help in this enterprise. If each school has a special Instructor on It's grounds one - afternoon a week, this organisation should hold together and function ef ficiently. Summes Program : Summer vacation In the public schools, approximately three months time. Is the time when the city hoe greatest need of recreational lendera A staff of two can keep open! four cen ters one half day each continuously. These may be the three Elementary school centers and the Community House or the School . Centers ana Round-Up Park, w leadership at the Park may be substituted on certain day for that at any ono of the cen- ters. The Pork facilities should be utilised during the summer. Trained supplementary leaders can t easily secureed for the summer months, and at least one should be employed to permit a much needed vacation to those carrying this work through the year. The members of the Jolly Rachelor club, a local high school organization. plan to build a $4000 club house he-1" fore full. The location ha not yet been decided upon. The changes will Include the removal of the stairway from the Court street sidn to Garden street, -and extension of the telephone offices to Include the entire lower floor of the building. Work has commenced on the foun dation of the new boys' dormitory, at St. Joseph's academy. The- blulding., which Is to cost 9000. will consist of . two stories. Downstairs will be the study room, recreation hall, etc., while upstairs 111 provide sleeping quarters and accommodations for ISO Soys. The new IS0.00O building, built as an an nex to the present school building, is nearfng completion. It affords quur ters for 125 girls. Class rooms and other quarters are also provided. Office Is lUroodnlled. The H. W. Collins offices on Court street are being remodelled. . The Im provements will Include- more office ' space and will provide accommodat ions for the increased Collins forces. Permits It each (11.000. The month of July sees an increase In building activities in Pendleton, the permits so far totalling $14,000. an unusually- large sum for so early in r . the month. The sum of $2000 is to be spent by the Pendleton Elevator ' Company Jn remodelling offices, while Anna Brown and F. C. Carney each secured a permit for $100 for repairs to dwellings. X. A. Humphrey secur ed a permit of J200 for repairs to a residence. Mrs. Ann Matlock's permit for $2000 was for repairs and remod elling of the telephone building. F. M. Griggs secured a permit for $500. for remodelling a -dwelling.- The :' bulk of the total was caused by the issuance of a permit for a $9000 build ing to be built by St. Joseph's Acad emy.
