It is easy to understand the German viewpoint, it is impossible not to sympathize to some extent with the feelings of the German people. Yet the cold facts are that the German warlords should be brought to trial not only to inflict upon them the just ven geance of the allied world but to put the fear of God into the hearts of future criminals of this character. The world wants warfare ended. Then one of the first steps should be to make war guilt personal. Set up the principle that men who start wars of aggression shall be held personally re sponsible by civilization and there will be fewer wars of this character. The German leaders were responsible for a war in which millions of brave men went to untimely deaths and through which cruel hardships, worse than death in many cases, were forced upon countless millions. Let them pay the price. THE DAY OF THE ULTIMATE CONSUMER Born in 1839 Dr. Caldwell y Still in His Office Daily i Wonderful vigor of the founder of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. Millions now use his famous prescription Physicians know that good health depends largely upon proper digestion and elimination and that much sickness results from constipation. No one knows this better than the '"family" doctor, the general piuctiouer. m W. B. Caldwell of Mon- t Mo, Illinois, wns mid is a family doctor. Tim whole hum. hi body, not any small part of it It. us his practice. More than half nis "calls" were on women, children and babies. They are the ones most often sick. But their illnesscswere usually of a minor nature colds, fevers, head aches, biliousness ond all of tiein required lirst a thorough evacuation. They wercconstipated. Dr. Caldwell in the course of 40 years' practice, for ho was grad uated from Hush Medical College back in 1873, had found a food deal of success in such cases w 1 1 la a prescription of his own contain ing simple laxative herlw with pepsin. In 1892 he decided to use Ibis formula in the manufac ture of a medicino to be known as Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, ond in that yearthe preparation was first placed on the market. The picture of Dr. Caldwell that ap pears on the package was taken id that ... The preparation immediately had as great a success in the drug stores as it previously had in the doctor's private practice. Today the third generation is using it. Mothers, are giving it to Iheir children who were given it by their mothers. Kvcry second of tlio working day someone some where is going into a drug store to buy it. fof Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin tsssffioa at the rate of over 6 million bottles a year. Ita great success is based on merit, on repeated buying, on ono satisfied user telling another. Than are tliiMis.in.lH of honies in this country thnt are never with out a liottlo of Syrup Pepsin, and tho foiinululor of that prescrip tion .. fortunately living to see ita wonderful success. i Women, children and elderly people arc especially benclitted by I)r. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. While it is promptly effective on the most robust constitution and in tlie most obstinate cases, it is mild and genljo in its action and does not cause griping and strain. Containing neither opiates nor narcotics, it is safe for the tiniest baby ami children like it uud take it willingly. Every drug store sells Dr. Cald well's Syrup Pepsin. Keep :i bottle in your home. WALLA WALLAN PLANS of tli.it placS for failure to close pul lie M'rvicea iluring the infloemui opl dsnitc, a HE expected European demand did not develop." This (XI 's ne explanation given for the sudden dumping on the local market of cold storage eggs bought at 50 cents a dozen and now offered Wholesale as low as 11 cents. It is a good enough explanation as far as it goes for other swift downward turns in commodity prices corn, oats, rye, pork products, bntter, cotton. The list is a long one already and is likely to become much longer and deeper in its price-cuts be fore we are through with the late wild speculative scramble for the utmost individual profits to be exacted from a war-impoverished world. The foreign-exchange market continues to tell the story of why that European demand "did not develop." It could only have developed on more money borrowed from the United States and when it appeared that the United States itself was so far in flated and extended in credit as to be nnable to lend more to Europe the fall to solider earth begins on both sides of the At lantic. It had to come some time, and it might as well come now, and it is coming in the only way which makes it permanently and generally effective as against the cost of living, which had become unbearable to the great masses of the people. Sir Auck land Geddes says that America has too much of the world's gold, which is the fact. A further fact is that we have hypothecated this gold over-much in circulating notes and bank credits. We must contract as Europe is compelled to contract. The day of the ultimate consumer as against the profiteer on inflated chedit at last approaches. New York World. A representative of Holland dairy interests is now m Port land trying to arrange for the sale of Holland butter on the Pa cific coast, saying that even with the high freight rates prevail ing Holland batter can be sold at lower figures than people are paying for northwest butter. It looks like the day the consumer has prayed for is almost at hand The league covenant without article 10 would be like a brick house without mortar to hold the bricks in place ; why do the Lodge forces insist on wrecking the plan by repudiating this vi tal part of the treaty? Two girls are traveling 8000 miles to marry a couple of Walla Walla men ; Pendleton boys have more pep and believe in going after the girls. The railroad men are demanding a wage increase just when there is real evidence of a coming drop in living costs. Time for some good man to make a noise like a candidate for our lucrative county judgeship. Dr. Stork is being blamed for the fact census figures do not measure up to expectations.
