MAKE WAR GUILT PERSONAL
KRAI ANY does not want the kaiser or any of her other
war leaders brought to trial. It is easy to understand
the German viewpoint, it is impossible not to sympathize
to some extent with the feelings of the German people.
Yet the cold facts are that the German warlords should be
brought to trial not only to inflict upon them the just ven
geance of the allied world but to put the fear of God into the
hearts of future criminals of this character.
The world wants warfare ended. Then one of the first steps
should be to make war guilt personal. Set up the principle that
men who start wars of aggression shall be held personally re
sponsible by civilization and there will be fewer wars of this
character.
The German leaders were responsible for a war in which
millions of brave men went to untimely deaths and through
which cruel hardships, worse than death in many cases, were
forced upon countless millions.
Let them pay the price.

It is a good enough explanation as far as it goes for other
swift downward turns in commodity prices corn, oats, rye,

is likely to become much longer and deeper in its price-cuts be
fore we are through with the late wild speculative scramble for
the utmost individual profits to be exacted from a war-impoverished
world.
The foreign-exchange market continues to tell the story of
why that European demand "did not develop." It could only
have developed on more money borrowed from the United States
and when it appeared that the United States itself was so far in
flated and extended in credit as to be nnable to lend more to
Europe the fall to solider earth begins on both sides of the At
lantic. It had to come some time, and it might as well come now,
and it is coming in the only way which makes it permanently
and generally effective as against the cost of living, which had
become unbearable to the great masses of the people. Sir Auck
land Geddes says that America has too much of the world's gold,
which is the fact. A further fact is that we have hypothecated
this gold over-much in circulating notes and bank credits. We
must contract as Europe is compelled to contract.
