' : m j Cattle to Omaha Illustrating the tendency on the part of cattlemen as well as sheepmen to ship their stock east because of the low prices offered iji the coast markets Is a five car shipment of fine beef cattle made from here to Omaha yesterday. The cattle belong to a Mr. Cummings and i were driven in from Mt. Vernon. This. Is by no means the first shipment east as a number of ble shipments were' made during the summer from eastern Washington and eastern Oregon. Just a few days ago some heavy shipment were made from Idaho, one shipment of 15 cars being reported. Sept 21 Deputy sher iff Canon of Morrow county and mar shal of lone shot and Instantly killed Charles Earheart, aged 46, an ex- convict from the Oregon penitentiary, In front of the Palace Hotel when the latter pulled a gun on the officer and cried: "Tour game's up; ram going to pet you." Earheart, who had been drinking, shot twice wide of his mark, and be fore he could turn a third barrel, Cason quick as a flash, drew his re volver and, with one shot In the breast Earheart fell dead. Earheart often had threatened the i:fe of Cnson, ho, as marshal of lone, arrested him the night of July 3. 1908. for "shutting up the town." At that time Earheart Injured sev eral persons, and for hla escapade served five years In the Salem Insti tution. He formerly was a saloon keeper at lone. CHICAGO, Sept 16. All was in readiness here for the opening of the speed boat races. All of the cracks in the country are here to take part In the events, which, begininng this afternoon, will continue for a week. For the purpose of studying the cowboys and Indians who gather here for the Round-up. A. Phlmister Proc tor, celebrated New York sculptor, arrived In Pendleton yesterday from Portland where he has been for some time. Not only will he attend the Round-up, but If he succeeds it finding suitable accommodations for himself and family, contemplates re maining here until spring to pursue his studies. Mr. Proctor Is perhaps the foremost sculptor of animals In America and he has won a great deal of renown by his bronxe work of cowboys and Indians. He won the grand prize at the Paris exposition with his statue of the Indian chieftain and his pony. He is the. author of "The Bison" on the bridge at Washington, D. c, of "Tha TlTa,-at tha Princeton li brary, of the colossal Pumas" at the entrance of Brooklyn Park and many other noted works. He spent the summer among the Sioux Indians. He Is very enthusias tic over the Round-up and finds his visit here already Inspirational. To-: day he is out in the cow and sheep j country with Dan P.
