MAY CHANGE HANDS Portland. Ore., Jan. 21. Commer cial bodies and shippers of the upper Columbia and Snake rivers are co operating with owners of river trans portation companies in Portland in a proposition to take over the fleet and equipment of the Open River Trans portation company, of this city, with a view to its continuous operation. The commercial organizations of the territory bordering on the Columbia Snake waterway held a joint meeting at Pasco a week ago last Saturday and named a general committee to have charge of the work of secur ing co-operation of merchants, farm ers and shippers with the proposed new line and during the past two days conferences have been held In this city with J. X. Teal and other officials of the Open River company. Dr. X. G. Blalock of Walla Walla; Wallace R. Struble, secretary-manager of the Idaho-Washington Devel opment League, Lewlston; Captain W. P. Gray, of Pasco; Dr. J. B. Mor ris, A. S. Stacy and Frank Thompson of Lewlston, represented the up-river constituency, Captain . V. Degerstedt Captain L. C. Hosford and Captain Arthur Riggs were present on behalf of the Clatskanle " Transportation company and the Hosford Transpor tation company, who propose to take over the Open River company's fleet. "The citizens of the Columbia Snake basin are united in the pur pose to give the open river service substantial cooperation," said Secre tary Struble. "The opinion Is uni versal among our shippers that abun dant tonnage can be secured to make the continuous operation of the line a financial success. The essential concomitants are regularity and ade quacy of service on the part of steam boat men and proper freight rates.
