cial bodies and shippers of the upper
Columbia and Snake rivers are co
operating with owners of river trans
portation companies in Portland in a
proposition to take over the fleet and
equipment of the Open River Trans
portation company, of this city, with
a view to its continuous operation.
The commercial organizations of the
territory bordering on the Columbia
Snake waterway held a joint meeting
at Pasco a week ago last Saturday
and named a general committee to
have charge of the work of secur
ing co-operation of merchants, farm
ers and shippers with the proposed
new line and during the past two
days conferences have been held In
this city with J. X. Teal and other
officials of the Open River company.

tary Struble. "The opinion Is uni
versal among our shippers that abun
dant tonnage can be secured to make
the continuous operation of the line

quacy of service on the part of steam
boat men and proper freight rates. It
