The statement made by Mr. Harcourt In parliament as to a bequest to the nation of vhat he de scribed as "one of the finest historical monuments In the country." has aroused widespread interest and curi osity. Inquiries have thus far failed to throw any light on the identity of the "monument" referred to by Mr. Har court. though varinn conjectures were hazarded. One authority sug cested that the statement might re fer to Richmond Castle, Yorkshire, which has Just been handed over to the protection of his majesty's office of works. Another suggested Stone-her..- or Rattle Abbey certainly rel ics of such historical interest that they ought, in his opinion, to be the prop erty of the nation. Among other buildings and monu ments which. It was suggested In va rious quarters, might desirably belong to the nation thougn most of them were obviously impossible as the ob ject of Mr. Harcrturt's statement were the famous Wall of Antonlus. which extends through so wide an area of England; the hut circles and other prehistoric remains on Dart moor: the beautiful island of lona. the birthplace of Christianity In these lles: Tlntnagel Castle nnd the castles of Warwick' and Kenilworth. It may not be generally known that no less than three separate Royal commissioners are sitting Just now to Inquire into the question of the preservation of historical monu ments, one commission being ap pointed for England. Another for Scotland and the third for Wales, the members of the commission taking each country separately. RUSSIA FORCES ODESSA TO BE EAIR TO THE JEWS St rctershure. Thursday.
