has Just returned from the Hotel

onel John Jacob Astor, whom she
divorced, and their soi. Vincent As
tor. A very formal family council
was held regarding Vincent Astor's
visits to his mother and In relation
to certain financial arrangements.
Mrs. Astor's friends have gained
the impression that she did not carry
all her points, as Colonel Astor Insist
ed that some of Ms wishes he carried
out.
Mrs. Astor's plan was to take her
sun aiul daughter to Cannes, but It
was arranged finally that she and her
children should go to Waldorf Astor's
residence, Cllvedon. where they will
remain until Vincent Astor returns
in N'ew York.

N. at' Heppnnr Junction, has been In
stalled as agent at Umatilla.
High School TlicKpluiis on Road.
The members of the annual junior
class play troupe left this morning
for Weston, where the "Lawyer and
the Client," which was twice success
fully presented , to Pendleton audi
ences, will be put on tonight. The
troupe was accompanied by City Su
perintendent Landers.
Baseball Benefit Postponed.
"The Sultan's Daughter," the play
which was to have been put on Tues
day evening by local talent for the
benefit of the Pendleton baseball
team, will not be presented until Fri
day evening, April 29. The change of
dates was made necessary by the Odd
Fellows' excursion to Walla Walla,
next Tuesday.
Curpet Cleaner Recovered.
Sheriff T. D. Taylor left this morn
ing for Cutbank, Montana, to take In
to custody, Dave Myers who is want
ed here to answer to the charge of
stealing the carpet cleaning machine
from his brother-in-law, Louis Car-
gill. The machine has been recovered
and the officers have been after Myers
for several days.

John D. Twohy, another member of
the. contracting firm of Twohy Bros.,
arrived here last night to Join his
brother, Robert Twohy. who has been
here for the past few days, personally
directing the work preparatory to the
rebuilding of the main line of the O.
O. & N. between this city and Yoa
kum. Both men left for the camp
at Pilot Rock Junction this morn:ng.
Putting I'p Extra Wires.
The Western Union Telegraph com
pany now has a force of men at work
out of this city installing an extra tel
egraph wire between Portland and
Baker City. This Installation of the
new wire was made necessary by the
Increase in the amount of the local
business In the eastern Oregon terri
tory. The crew Is now at work be
tween Stanfield and Umatilla. but
headquarters are maintained In this
city.
XKW REQUEST TO THE
NATION A MYSTERY
London. The statement made by
Mr. Harcourt In parliament as to a
bequest to the nation of vhat he de
scribed as "one of the finest historical
monuments In the country." has
aroused widespread interest and curi
osity. Inquiries have thus far failed to
throw any light on the identity of the
"monument" referred to by Mr. Har
court. though varinn conjectures
were hazarded. One authority sug
cested that the statement might re
fer to Richmond Castle, Yorkshire,
which has Just been handed over to
the protection of his majesty's office
of works. Another suggested Stone-her..-
or Rattle Abbey certainly rel
ics of such historical interest that they
ought, in his opinion, to be the prop
erty of the nation.

ments which. It was suggested In va
rious quarters, might desirably belong
to the nation thougn most of them
were obviously impossible as the ob
ject of Mr. Harcrturt's statement
were the famous Wall of Antonlus.

working majority for the election of
the board of directors, a p!an of re
organization was adopted by the re
actionary board of aldermen, separ
ating the electors into two categori
es, according to rellon. the Chris
tian category, though numerically In
ferior, to elect a majority of the
board.

THE PROJECT TOWN

Hermlston, Ore., April 20. Yester
day a string of Western Union work
cars was sidetracked, today a large
force of men is at work putting on
cross arms for additional wires.
P. Young, brother of H. J. Young,
O. R. & N. agent, arrived a few days
ago from North Carolina. He has
gone to work for R. E. Allen of the
Pioneer Pharmacy.
E. C. Neymeyer and Jake Riling
have arrived from Erie, Pennsylvan
ia, and are now engaged In looking
over the government project with the
intention of making this their future
home. Mr. Neymeyer is an expert
florist and market gardener and In
tends taking up that line here. He
has been actively engaged In that
business at Erie for a number of
years.
John A. Oliver of Echo, Oregon,
has been down today making final
proof on his deceased brother's home
stead. Monday and yesterday were excep
tionally hot days for this time of the
year, the government thermometer
registering 89 degrees a the highest
but nothing makes the alfalfa grow
ranker or the strawberries ripen
earlier.
Mrs. Fannie G. Crawford and son
Arthur have gone over to the Sound
for a short visit with friends.
W. E. McMillen has sold his house
out near the ball park to Levi Reed
er. Mr. Ackley and witnesses of Echo
were down yesterday and made final
proof before United States Commis
sioner Crawford.
Ed Lammers and Charles Taylor
have' each purchased a twenty acre
tract north of town in the third unit.

Echo,' Ore., April 21. The first
carload of wool sold here this season
went out yesterday. It was sold by
R. V. Stanfield to the Woolen Mills
at Pendleton.
Fred Judd with a party of wool
buyers was here yesterday from Pen
dleton, having driven over in an au
tomobile. F. W. Andrews left for Portland
yesterday with three carloads of
choice beef cattle.
R. B. Stanfield is in Pendleton on
business.
Mrs Antone Vey came down from
Pendleton yesterday and accompanied
her husband out to their Butter creek
ranch, where she will remain for a
few weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Young returned
home Tuesday from a short visit at
Walla Walla.
F. G. Smith came home yesterday
morning from Pendleton, having been
given a two days' absence from Jury
duty.
F. G. Galloway arrived home yes
terday from Portland, where he has
been detained on account of sickness
in his family.

He Takes Pig to Jail.
Santa Monica. In one of the cells
of the local jail Is Harry Hass, 25
years old. who says he is from Pasa
dena, and in there with him is a six-weeks-old
pig. Hass refused to part
with the baby porker, and the officers
granted his request that the pig be
permitted to remain in the cell. Hass
wa. acting rather peculiarly as he
came into town and was taken to the
, p dice station. He carried a gunny
I sack, and when this was opened a
. very healthy little pig came to view.
